    From our classifieds:

    Yard Sale
    This Saturday, June 27
    8:00 - 1:00

If you're interested in some of the items that are listed below, before Saturday, just give me a call.

Dog - 2 years old (this past April) neutered Jack Russell mix; reddish brown in color; about 42 pounds, small-to-medium size - $20.

Kitten - 8-10 weeks old, female. We've had to move and can't keep her. We saved her from living life as a feral cat. Please help re-home her. She'll be a gift to you, if you promise, promise, promise, to take care of her and show her lots of love.

Animals treated like just another yard sale item-that's really bad! People should be more responsible than that!

I don't see that much wrong with it. To me, it's much better than those selling animals week in and week out at the flea market...of course, I don't know if they even do that any more. The way I see it, you have pups and a kitten that are not pedigree animals and by having them available at a yard sale, increases the likelihood of selling them. As the owner, you have no more guarantee that they will be treated better by selling the separately.

What really gets us is seeing people selling puppies on the corner of Cornwallis and Cleveland Rds, at that corner fresh produce stand. These people have their pups in cages, in the sun, and it seems so inhumane. I see they have fans and attempt to provide shade, but it can't be a healthy situation for these poor pups. Every time we drive by, we want to just rescue them all. There has to be some kind of law against soliciting pets this way...

Well its better them try and sell them than throw them out of the car and someone attempt to rescue them off the side of the road and either get bit or cause a bad traffic accident! :)

There's been somebody on 42 between Old Drug Store and Cleveland Rd lately, too. Those poor dogs must be so hot and miserable in those cages in the sun.

I think a license law would cut way down on this stuff. There should be a nominal license fee for neutered animals, and substantially more for animals that have not been spayed or neutered. And fines for unlicensed animals.

I can understand to some degree if people selling pets want to avoid having just any person coming to their house to look at a pup or kitten, however I strongly agree how many people set up in a parking lot or similar with very little shade with the mother and do not even think twice about the heat.

Another pet peeve (no pun intended) of mine is seeing people who would claim to be a dog lover and then go out walking or jogging in the heat of the day on asphalt or a sidewalk. I always feel so sorry for dogs subjected to having to walk or run in the heat on extremely hot surfaces like that.

I'll be honest. While I don't consider pets like people, I respect their right to love and the best of care. If a person is going to own a pet, they should take of it. I have had several dogs and a couple of cats and wouldn't mistreat one for the world. I hate to see people leave an animal in a hot car with the windows only cracked or left to lay in a hot pickup truck bed with no shade. Don't travel with your pet if you are going to have to leave it in such conditions.

Also, when at home...thoroughly wet the ground, put out a fan (keep the cords away from chewing and water) and make sure they have shade...particularly dogs confined in a pen or kennel.

You would think these things are obvious, but you see people who don't think or just don't care doing this stuff year in and year out.
