The 911 caller who reported a possible break-in at the home of black Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. did not mention race in the call, according to a statement issued by her attorney and backed up by Cambridge Police Commissioner Robert Haas.

I have to say I agree with Bob Schieffer.

But it was not an insult to ask the man for his ID. That's ridiculous. He had to confirm he was the homeowner. He can apologize for making what MAY have been a hasty arrest, but Schieffer is off the mark about the ID thing. And the "he had other things on his mind" excuse for Obama is weak. He's the President. He is supposed to have a lot of things on his mind and be able to deal with it.

Also not sure of the accuracy but he didn't show his id with address he showed his College id badge which didn't show proof of address.

Where did you get that? Everything I've seen said he did show proof that he lived there, before he was arrested.

Did I read somewhere that his house had been broken into before, like twice? Were they thinking that a thief could have his ID?

I don't know, that's certainly a possibility. But he was not arrested because they didn't think he lived there. He was arrested for being loud and tumultuous on his porch. I do not say, and have not ever said, that Gates is blameless here. I'm sure he acted like a butthole. But being obnoxious is not against the law. I think both sides overreacted. And I think Obama should have declined to comment, beyond saying he did not have all the facts.

They recently had 9 break ins in the area recently and most were daytime I believe...

No, it would not be an insult to ask for ID, but the way in which one asked could make it either a compliment or an insult.

Cmon I have ties up in Bean town.... did a lot of work in and around that area... it was a local report I heard from a homey there... He doesn't even own the house.

If they are to release any tapes or videos than it may come to light.

Whatever happened to "Wow. Thanks officers for looking out for me and my home. Yes, I live here. Hold on, I will show you proof"?

And yeah, I agree with you KDs.

From the police report that Salvation posted in the other thread, it seems clear to me that Sgt. Crowley was satisfied that Gates was the resident, and Crowley was starting to leave. He told Gates if he had anything else to say, to say it outside, and he walked out of the house. Gates followed him outside and continued his ******** behavior. At that point, the police officer could have walked away and left Gates steaming on his front porch. That would have been the end of it.

Harvard University owns the house. You don't have to have ties in Boston to know that.

Maybe if the butt hole said thank you for taking the time to make sure all is right here at my house instead of flying off the race card all would've been good. I don't put the blame on the police...

You are correct Obama had no business even commenting on it regardless of what went down.
I mean is he going to comment on all other possible police arrest involving a professor if there is one again... If said butt hole hadn't screamed racism it would be a moot point.

I guess he saw it as a way to get a beer with the O-man... I also wonder if this is a first. President inviting someone to the House to have a beer and I assume a heater{cig] also... What kind of beer you think they will have...

old english 800 or maybe a schlitz.... :jester: Poor officer

You're right he should have asked pretty please with a cherry on top. All the while being yelled at and accused of racial profiling.

So you assume one side started it with what as proof?

Well I'm sure you'll think the cop started it and I'll say Gates started it. Shocker. And did you even read the police report or just know that you weren't going to believe any of it so you didn't bother? The report says the officer asked Gates to step outside and Gates said no, I will not. He asked the officer who he was and what he was doing and the officer tells him and Gates opens the door and yells about the reason why the cops are there is because he is a black man in america. It's pretty obvious who started it and I'm not sure anyone is disputing the fact that Gates started it other than you. Again, shocker.
