I am an animal control officer who found a pet bird today. Sorry...if he is yours you have to tell me what kind he/she is. I don't want someone trying to claim him if he is not theirs. Very friendly though...I am sure he/she is missing you!

    owner has been found!

The bird was a quaker parrot. I traced his leg band to the breeder. The breeder gave me the # to the pet store where he sold the bird. The pet store gave me the 3 names of people who bought quakers last year....a few phone calls later, I found the owner. The bird lives in Cary and has been missing for 3 weeks! His name is Charlie, and he goes home tonight!

Sounds like a happy ending. It also great to know there are people out there like you willing to go the extra mile to find the owner. Well done. :hurray:

Thanks for the due dilligence in finding the owner! I recently contacted Animal Control about a dog wandering in our neighborhood and thanks to the wonderful officer was able to find the animal hospital where the rabies shot had been done. They in turn returned the dog to the owner. I know sometimes Animal Control gets some bad media but I appreciate and respect the difficult job you have!

    thanks!

Thanks for the kind words...I have been doing this for 9 years now and I truly love animals and love my job. I am fortunate in some ways that I work in Clayton and not the county, just because I do not have the volume of calls that they do. I keep busy...don't get me wrong but they are slammed all the time! AND I never mind going the extra mile for animals.....just not people! LOL I think that the Clayton News is being sent a press release on the story...and I was told by my Sup. that they are going to send it out to TV as well...SO see if anyone pics it up and you catch me on TV! LOL

We now have a celebrity in our midst!
Escaped parrot back in the coop

    Posted: Today at 8:22 a.m.

Clayton, N.C. — A parrot who flew the coop five weeks ago got reunited with his Cary family Friday, after an alert Clayton resident and animal control officer nabbed him.

The resident called Animal Control after seeing a green parrot flying around the Glen Laurel subdivision. Animal Control Officer Angela Lee found the parrot perched in a tree. She caught the bird in a net and put him in a cage.

The Quaker parrot, who officers later learned is named "Charlie," appeared to be well-fed and healthy. A resident found "unusual scoop-like bites" on vegetables in his garden, Lee said.

"Charlie may have been enjoying a free meal or two," she said.

Lee found a number on a band on Charlie's leg and contacted the Caged Bird Society, which tracked down the breeder. The breeder located the store where Charlie was sold. By process of elimination, the store identified Charlie's owners.

Lee brought Charlie home to his thrilled family Friday.

His owners said he had flown out an open door. He was found 25 to 30 miles from his home, as the bird flies.

"The bird's whereabouts during his 5-week freedom flight can not be determined," according to a release from Clayton Police. "Although Charlie may be able to speak a few words, he seems to have exercised his right to remain silent in this case."
