DS is turning 9. I want to get him a hand held video system (he has long outgrown his leapster).

I know nothing about these. DS? DS-Lite?

Help! I know I can go to Game Stop, etc, but he's usually with me.

    Thx.

To my understanding, the DS Lite is for mainly gaming whereas the DSi comes with a web browser...and a camera I believe. Not sure about the last thing. We bought our 7YO a DS Lite since he's in it right now for the games only. Plus, its cheaper. The Lite has a slightly smaller screen, but by all means still functional. Just make sure with either, you get a starter kit with screen protector and the little screen pointers thingies...and a carrying case.

Another option might be the PSP by Sony, however it seems geared toward more of a more mature gamer.

the DSi is the coolest and most awesome DS on the block. its around 170 at gamestop, and has some level of mp3 (i think 256MB of storage?)

The DSLite is still a butt-kicking system, i still have one and haven't traded it in for a DSi yet.

Personally, i think the original DS is too large and heavy, especially for a 9 yearold, he might have difficulty playing the touch sensitive games on it without a hard surface to set it on.

Save the bucks and go with the DSLite vs the DSi. For a 9 year old, I would say the DSi's web browser and camera is a little bit of over-kill.

I bought my daughter's DSLite online and saved a ton. Plus, I play with it more than she does. FYI... Target has a nice selection of discounted games.

Unless you absolutely HAVE to have the newest games, remember too that you can go to Game Stop and buy used games...even for the DS lite. I usually go there to buy games for my son's DS and my PS2. I'm not that much of a serious gamer so I don't require the latest. I just let somebody else play the 'new' off of them.

I think Redneck forgot to change his login!! I just did not see him as the online shopping type.

I bought both my boys a used DS off Craigs list for 50-70 (one came with some games). I am sure there will be lots of ds lites coming available with the dsi coming out. We may get the DSi for Christmas since they never upgraded to a dslite. My 7 yr old has no trouble holding the regular DS--actually my 4 year old can hold it pretty well and pretend to play.

I just purchased my 7 year old a DS Lite at Gamestop new for $129 with a free "starter" pack. He had been asking for a year or more because alot of his friends have them.

That's got me worried about my son's DS, because his friends are allowed to carry them to school as long as they play with them at appropriate times. I'm not crazy about him carrying something like that to school, but I know its coming in a few weeks...

I would be interested in buying any childrens games!

I have a brand new Leapster in the box that I am interested in selling if anyone was looking for one of those. Ended up getting the 'star wars' version and never opened this one!
