You are right, they are closely related. I tell mine that the 'have nots' are the 'in' crowd. They just don't realize it yet.

My boys are about to be in 7th grade, and they still dont have a cell phone (yes I know, they constantly remind me they are the Only ones on the planet without one). They are finally coming to realize that it really is ok, though they won't dare admit it.

Hey, tell your boys they are NOT the only ones in 7th grade w/out one--LOL. My 7th, 8th & 9th graders do not have one and won't until they can get a job & pay for it themselves IF they want to. But by then, I'm sure they'll want to save for a car instead. We said we'd help them out w/ the car but they definitely will have to earn and contribute towards it. And you know what, there has never been a situation or a time where my kids have not been able to get in touch w/ us. they go to their friends' houses, which have phones to call; go to recreation places and they have phones if necessary; etc. My kids I think understand now but like yours would never admit it--LOL.

I almost got them one for their birthday...but I got to thinking.....the only thing it would benefit, is me being able to keep up with them on the weekends, or when they are with their Dad. I just decided it just wasn't that necessary. I will survive.

I would consent to my kid having a cell phone perhaps as early as 8th grade with conditions and special circumstances. If he were involved in after school activities or spent a lot of time at various friends' houses, I would relent and get him one. I Abuse of the privilege of having one would mean a repossession of it for awhile. I wouldn't want him in any position where he couldn't contact me if need be.

Now, when he gets of driving age--even just to school and back--I would want him to have a cell phone. I didn't have one in high school, but times are different now. With the affordable technology in place, he would definitely have one when he starts driving.
