College Freshmen Advice or Rules

I hear you, my daughter is a 5th year Senior.... go class of 09.5!!:lol::lol:

 

I had a friend that took 5 yrs...she called it her 'super senior' year. :lol:

 

yep maybe tomorrow night.

 

wished i had known about this last week.

 

I hope she doesn't take 5 years. She's already talking about 2 more for her masters.

 

college rules:
It seems my dd's roommate has already broken most of them, lol.

She has 3 tattoos and an almost 3 yr old. Lord, help me! :banghead:

 

I graduated Campbell U. in December. I learned at the end of my freshman year, go to Half.com for your books! So much cheaper than the bookstore!

If you live off-campus, be careful (I did since my freshman year...by secret). I had drunk students coming to my doors, and solicitors trying to get in to sell me crap. Plus, except someone below or above you to have loud music or noise. I had to deal with it a few years (thankfully not on my side of the apartment..) and the guy "said" he'd turn it down but never did.

I was not one of the partying college students really, and still had a great time. Meeting new people, campus activities and all.

OH, get involved if you can too! (Clubs, newspaper, sports - go to games, festivals, etc.)

 

How many questions did you ask before you figured out the location of the dipstick?

 

My baby just got home from her first day of class and I have sticker shock. She spent $1100 in the book store and still has more to buy, half of that was dental supplies, i should never have to pay for my teeth to be cleaned again when she finishes.

 

OUCH! We learned to not buy books until she goes to each class once. 1/2 the teachers dont use the books. The first year, she was able to take several back for full price (there are only a few days at the beginning where you can do this)

There are also several used book stores. (you can even send them your schedule and they look up and gather all the books you need).

Books can end up costing more than the actual classes... and they seem to change the required book every other year so the used books arent any good!!

 

they told her the books she needed at orientation so she only got what she needed and she could only buy 2 used books. financial aid did pay for some but because she is using financial aid she couldn't go to other places to buy.

 

about as many as it took you before you found the cows teat.

Thanks for the info for www.half.com and I also lucked out and found some books really cheap on eBay....wow, I never new (or just didn't remember) that all books have ISBN #'s....maybe I need to go back to college, huh?

 

No prob. Edward McKay's in Raleigh also sells all sorts of used text books as well. You can also sell them to them when you're done (the school bookstore doesn't give you but about half back for them..other places give you more).

 

- Suck up to your teacher the first couple weeks of class by participating and doing your work, maybe going to office hours. It'll pay off when you need a point or two on a test or project later.

- Go ahead and dump your high school girlfriend now

- Exit only means do not enter

- If you're not sure if you'll need to take it to college, don't.

- Don't wait until you have absolutely no clean clothes to do laundry. If you are living anywhere on campus, don't wait to do laundry during the weekend, you will never get it done or someone will take your clothes out of washer/dryer and your clothes will get messed up. Do it during the week on an afternoon when you have no class.

- Wait a day or two to buy your books...look on amazon.com and ebay and barnes & noble's site, they'll all be cheaper than the bookstore, just make sure you get the right version...

- If you do buy books, save the CD that comes with it... that can be worth between 5 and 15 extra dollars on buyback, and if the book is an old edition, the CD might be the only thing of value.

- Get involved in athletics. Whether you join a club team of some sort or just go out every couple of days and throw football or frisbee with your friends. You'll get exercise, meet people, relieve stress, and just be in an overall better mood because you're active. Sitting around in your room all day every day will leave your body and mind weary.
