I have my own health insurance through BCBS and my entire family is on there for ~$400/mo. Now granted my wife and I are in our 30s and we are pretty healthy (knocks on wood) so I would recommend going that route if it's better than what your company provides.
It's clean, it's well staffed and they have great prices. Some of us have to worry about that. Not all of us can be above it all and rich to boot. I'm retired so I watch where my money goes and after grocery shopping there just once and comparing it to Lowes, it is hands down the winner. I just can't see throwing my money away to prove a point. Oops, I almost fell off my high horse there. Steady girl. :beathorse:
I went for the first time today and hated it. Once again, half the stuff on my list was not available. They've been open a week and still can't get merchandise on the shelves? Come it, it was a Tuesday evening, and it's Walmart. And what idiot designs these stores? I do NOT want to put my frozen foods in the cart first. I'd like to do cold and frozen last so that, just maybe, they'll still be cold and/or frozen when I get home...or at least to the freakin check-out. And the prices are higher than the store on 70, which was really annoying. I think I'm finally switching to Lowes for good. At least there I can get good meat and some consistency in finding what I need. I'll still use the Walmart for regular non-grocery items, but I'm done with them for groceries. Oh, and I'm not sure what the fuss is about the Dollar store. Maybe I'm spoiled by the one on Glenwood, but I was not even remotely excited about the inventory. A bunch of the stuff is just smaller versions of the items sold at the one on Glenwood, which is kinda funny. Finally, the three-way stop at the entrance is a nightmare. Everyone in the left lane was cutting into the right lane (before the 3-way) when they realized it was a turn-only lane into the construction trailers. And then no one knew what was going on at the three-way stop signs. We sat there and watched cars almost collide over and over again. What a shame. I was really excited about the shopping center being so close, but I honestly don't think I'll ever go back in there, unless they pull in a Kirklands or Borders/B&N. Or I'm really desperate for cat food or too lazy to one of the other Walmarts or Target.
I agree the stop at the entrance is odd. The prices are higher than the store in Garner ... example box of cereal in Garner $2.00 ... new WalMart $2.33.
That's what Walmart wants you to believe. You can get more bang for your buck by clipping coupons and shopping sales at stores that double coupons. Also, consider buying your meats in bulk at BJ's or Sam's and freezing in meal-size portions. The quality is better, you will save money, and you will have a variety to choose from in your freezer.
You also will have less store options to choose from in general, as Walmart will slowly begin to run their competition out of business because everyone thinks Walmart's prices are lower.
Walmart's prices are lower. I've shopped at Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Lowe's Foods and IGA and I've never found prices to be as low as Walmart. But, it's a free world and we're all free to shop wherever we want
Cleo is correct in my opinion. I shop Walmart for non-perishables if I don't have an appropriate coupon. Otherwise Lowe's gets most of my grocery business. I stock up when stuff is on sale, buy meat in bulk, etc. I have a freezer full of Tyson boneless skinless chicken breast from Kroger that was 1.79 a pound. My rule is to never pay more than 1.99 a pound for meat unless it's a special occasion and I gotta have steak or something. LOL I have pork roasts, turkey breasts, hams, tenderloins, etc. all in my freezer. I did pick up 5 of the 5lb bags of sugar at walmart last week when they were $1 a bag. I won't need sugar again til after the first of the year.
I find Lowe's Foods to be a little on the high side BUT they do double coupons which make for some awesome deals!
It's a personal preference just like anything else, where you shop and it depends on what you buy too. At least 80% of my groceries are fresh fruit and vegetables nothing boxed or processed, if it is, I try and go organic or the least processed possible. I wouldn't let my dog eat fruits/veggies out of the WalMarts produce dept., just for the record. FoodLion's is almost as bad. Neither carry much on the organic/non processed side. So for me, Lowe's is the only choice in this area. Makes the most sense for me and it makes for one less car at the evil empire.
LOL....now that you mention it....I don't even think I have any sugar at all in my house! what do you use it for? I guess maybe baking....
