I'm actually surprised it's that low.

Remember Illegals aren't counted in the Census reports and that's where there statistical information comes from.

That's what I mean. I would have thought the number to be much higher, especially given the unemployment rates here. Even with the price of COBRA reduced significantly, if you are unemployed you can't afford to pay for anything besides the roof over your head and utilities. My daughter was in that situation for several months and had to even stop paying COBRA.

Also found it interesting that the census numbers show that 28.4% of Americans are already covered by the government health care programs of Medicaid and Medicare.

    I wonder...

I don't know how large a percentage of the population this includes, but there are many veterans that can have health coverage without health "insurance". They just have to use VA facilities. I wonder if those are included in the "uninsured".

    5W,

With the shortage of available healthcare for veterans, the priority list for veterans is stacked towards, as it should be, with service connected disabilities, and retirees. We don;t, as a nation, appear to be able to take care of those, much less reach out to other veterans.

Even if veterans, such as myself, without health insurance would obtain an appt at a VA clinic, we also realize that our taking that appointment might preclude a more deserving veteran from obtaining one, so we use our "don't get sick" health plan.

As veterans, we are used to making sacrifices. For our fellow veterans, we'll wait. may not be the smartest thing in the world, but, that's how we roll.

Is that the Census information from 2000? If so, I'd say things appear worse than they were. I can't cite a source for that, off hand, but my perception is that things are worse than 9 years ago.

OK but what % of this 17% are people who can afford insurance but dont want it or have the option to turn down coverage where they work for more $ in their pay check.
