I some friends & I took our kids to this a couple of years ago. The kids had a great time ... and it's free. The bugfest will be tomorrow (9/12). I plan on taking my kids ... Is anyone else planning on going? I'm not big on tasting the bug treats served ... but I wouldn't mind watching someone else gobble down a few bugs ... yuck!! http://www.bugfest.org/
I aint never ate a bug on purpose, but I did taste a good size unidentified flying bug before. A few years ago I was drivin a dumptruck (the old kind with the little triangle side windows that you could spin around for air) when the little window snatched a bug from the outside and directed it into my mouth. Lucky for me my front teeth stopped it from flying down my throat but the high rate of speed created quite a mushy mess. Anyway, I don't know what kind it was but it had a nice sweet flavor to it.
I'm thinking of taking DS, we've kicked ourselves for the past couple years for not going, looks like fun. Hope we can work it in tomorrow anyway.
I asked about it last year and got some good feedback (under my old user name :mrgreen http://www.4042.com/4042forums/showthread.php?t=20782&highlight=Bugfest
My 4 year old ate crickets in chocolate and loved them!! Then he ate mealworms too! They have all different flavors!
Oh, I forgot about mealworms. Nevermind my last comment... Yeah I've eaten bugs before on a voluntary basis.
I think it was YOU who feed them to my child!! LOL Why was it they liked bugs but not ice cream?? You going tomorrow?
We went once, about 3 years ago, and my son was the perfect age...6. BUT the crowds were CRAZY and we couldn't really get around to see everything, we had a stroller with us and it was just IMPOSSIBLE. They had cool things going on inside and out, but we ended up leaving due to the crowds. My son is totally into all critters, but don't think we're going this weekend either, since he's gotten himself in a heap of trouble this week...
there is supposed to be more 'grown up' events after dark tonight. Maybe that means bands, beer, and deep fried tarantulas!!! They are good, a little fuzzy, but good.
We went yesterday morning before it got crowded. It was also cooler in the morning. I couldn't find where they had the chocolate covered crickets? Someone told me there would be some. Not that I wanted any!! My oldest daughter wanted to try them. Yuck!
I didn't see any chocolate covered crickets ... but there were chocolate covered mealworms. My son's friend ate 5 of them. My son is a picky eater like his dad so I didn't think there was a chance in the world that he would eat a worm. I spoke words that I lived to regret ... I told them that if he ate a worm I would eat one ... My dumb luck ... he actually ate the thing!!! Guess I'll survive if I get caught in the wilderness with no food ... I learned yesterday that I could eat a meal worm ... but I don't think I'll make that a habit. We spend 5 hours at the bugfest. There were baby bees there that the kids & I got to hold. We made silly hats & got lots a freebees. The weather was great & the music outside was nice. The kids enjoyed seeing all of the bugs and watching the giant butterfly sandcastle being made. We had a wonderful time. The only bad part of the trip was all the whistles in the museum. On the 3rd floor they were giving out free light-up whistles. Hundreds of kids were walking around the museum blowing on those things. I felt sorry for the volunteers who had to stay in there listening to that for a great deal of time.
We didn't make it. Decided to make a quick trip to the inlaws in VA on the spur of the moment. Had to be done and it might have been Christmas from the looks of our caledars. :?
