Forgive me if this is a repeat, but this flu is spreading like crazy in Wake County. I have several friends whose kids are out sick with it. Are there as many cases in Johnston County schools? I haven't heard of any at my daughter's school yet. Also, is Tamiflu the treatment? I had a friend tell me that her doctor said Tamiflu is not working for this H1N1, but I have other friends whose doctor has already prescribed it and said it does work.:allears:
they are prefering that you do not use Tamiflu is you can avoid doing so, your body can build up ammunity to antibiotics if taken so much and this is one that they do not want you to have ammunity of..
At the end of the first week back in school my 5th grader said a classmate didn't show and her mother called the teacher to inform her it was H1N1. His words.. with out my prompting. And Last week he had a sub from Tuesday through Friday. The teachers daughter was sick (not sure with what). :-( It out there for sure. I just keep reminding him to wash his hands at every opportunity. I don't think it's a matter of IF my kids get sick, but WHEN.
Knocked on a ladys door in Jo Co Friday said she had the *flu*, I didn't ask what kind. Another door I knocked on a guy came to the door and he said the had the *swine flu*, i left a card and almost RAN to my car
H1N1 vaccine (swine flu) is not available till October. Regular seasonal flu shots are already available everywhere. Tamiflu is something that is prescribed when (seasonal) flu like symptoms start, but only work if used within the first three days of symtoms.
My highschooler had a classmate that had it. URGHH!!! She went to school SICK. She was sick for a week, had a fever and went to school then. Parents let her. She went home again but that is AFTER exposing everyone and their brother to it. If your kids are sick, KEEP them home please. My son's prosthetist's baby girl had it last week. I haveknown many people in this county & schools to have gotten it already. We have a routine here. IF some of mine get it, we are talking probable hospitalizations so we are really being extra cautious. Apparently, those w/respiratory issues have it severely & are requiring hospitilization. I have 2 w/ severe asthma & 1 w/ holes in her heart. I think outof our whole family, those are the 3 I'm most worried about. We are taking precautions but really, if they're being exposed by kids who are coming to school due to unconcerned parents...well, that just irritates me. STay healthy! Stephanie--mom to 7
Forget about that. If they can't push them off to school or daycare as they are, they will dope them up to at least appear healthy for a few hours. Then if they are called to come and get them they won't hear their cell phones or it will take them 3 hours to make a 20 minute drive.
You better believe my kids will be out of school if they are sick. If anyone at my youngest daughter's preschool gets it, I'm keeping her out. Those little kids are together all the time sneezing and coughing on each other. I don't even want to chance it! I used to go to a church that the parents that didn't want to miss a Sunday would bring their sick kids anyway. One time I was teaching the 3 and 4 year old class and a little kid got sick. Then he told me he'd already thrown up once at home and his mom knew about it. Part of the responsibility of having kids is to sacrifice something you might want to do in order to protect them or other people. Sorry, rant over!!!
I have heard that because testing is so expensive, people are not being tested to confirm it is "swine flu" ... it's just being assumed. Makes me wonder about how many actual cases of this flu there really are and whether some are just colds/viruses.
Agree 110%! Even when I worked in the corportate world, I would keep them home & make arrangements w/ work. My boss wouldn't always be happy but if you are a good worker, they totally understand. So, being I used to be in the working world for years and was also a manager of a restaurant years before the corporate world, I have absolutely NO sympathy for parents who say "but I work and can't keep the kids home." Okay, vent over. I feel really sorry for all the teachers. So many kids are getting sick now & it is only September. I can't imagine what it will be like in a few months in the heart of flu season. Yikes! Stay as healthy as you can everyone. Stephanie--mom to 7
I was at school this morning helping a group a kids. Several of them kept coughing on me! Ahhh! I was about to go crazy. I kept getting out my hand sanitizer too. I'm sure they all thought I was freak. I wish I could have worn a gas mask in there!! I would have done it!
They want everyone to hurry up and get the regular flu shot so it will be in effect when Swine Flu shots are available. They don't want you to take them both at the same time. I got mine, I was the first appointment...... I don't want to give it to someone that might not be able to fight it........Some people don't care about who they make sick, they only care about themselves.... Take Care!!! :ack:
One of my student's sister has it, the parents kept all the kids home just in case. They go to Polenta Elem.
Are the swine flu shots like the regular flu shots w/ egg??? That's why I can't get the regular flu shot is due to the egg in it. Will this be the same type? Thanks. stephanie--mom to 7
I tried to take my kids for flu shots on Sat.... we are new to Clayton, so started at CVS in Clayton, no minute clinic, so saw a sign at Walgreens for shots so went there, they dont do it for anyone under 18, so went to Urgent care, they havent gotten the medicine yet.... SO I drove back to my old stopping grounds and went to the CVS at 40/42 and they had 10 sick people in line in front of us and the nurse said 'I wouldnt wait if I were you.' so the boys got away with no Flu shot... YET! LOL
http://www.everydayhealth.com/allergy-specialist/swine-flu-vaccine-egg-allergy.aspx Yes, most people with egg allergy can safely receive the swine flu vaccine. However, this may require evaluation by an allergist, and the vaccine may need to be given in two or more smaller doses. A vaccine for the swine flu is being manufactured using the same techniques as the seasonal flu vaccine. This means that some swine flu vaccines will be produced in egg cultures and may contain trace amounts of egg proteins. There will probably also be at least one brand that is produced in a different way and does not contain egg proteins. Doctors don’t yet know what type of vaccine will be distributed in their area, and because a shortage is expected, there may not be a choice about the type that is available.
Just a reminder folks: Regular Annual Flu shots are now available (I got mine last week) Expected H1N1 shots in early October.
I was reading about a study conducted that showed that H1N1 was not only more contagious than seasonal flu, but also it would dominate other influenza varieties. In the study, they also found that lab ferrets infected with H1N1 almost always developed lower respiratory problems whereas with seasonal flu, the virus stayed in the nasal passages. One important thing they discovered was that the ferrets were sicker when they had both, so it does make sense to go ahead and get the seasonal flu vaccine so your body doesn't have to defend against two different viruses. As for Tamiflu...I'd rather have it than not have it. There are some reportedly serious side effects in rare circumstances with it, but I'd rather take my chance on it than having the flu. Also, remember that Tamiflu is a type of anti-viral medication and not antibiotic so your body isn't likely to develop a tolerance to Tamiflu.
