I signed up for a Twitter account quite a while back to get updates on an event I wanted to attend. Lately, I've been getting a lot of "Joe Schmoe is following you on Twitter" e-mails. Is this some kind of scam or just a case of mistaken identity? Incidentally, I don't Twitter or text- I have a TELEPHONE!
There is a small fraction of the Twitter population known as spammers. They 'follow' you with the hope that you will be kind enough to follow them back so they can display links in your Twitter stream that lead you to any number of spammy things.
I wondered about that. I get a notice every now and then that so-and-so is following me, and I always think they must be bored, because I never tweet anything.
I've gotten a lot of questionable followers, usually women I don't know in their underwear. Obviously spam. I just block them.
Nothing on the Internet is FREE! If you "sign up", expect that to be used for purposes you don't agree with. You really have to thank the twitters, myspace, and all the other social network site members for drawing all the spammers and freaks away from the smart people on the web.
True, true! Nothing anywhere is truly free- everything costs something. I didn't see a sales pitch so I was wondering what these folks were getting out of it, just what their angle was.
