My High School (and Middle School) are the Red Devils--I have often wondered how long it will take before someone insists it be changes because of the Devil mascot--our biggest rival are the Blue Devils--
Whoever told you that is certainly not a native. I have lived here 25 years myself, and am still a transplant. A native is someone who was born and raised here. The newcomers I'm talking about are the ones who have increased the school population sufficient to require the building of new schools. I have never had children in the Johnston County schools, but my taxes still help pay for your children, and I certainly do not have any objection to that. I think public schools benefit the public, and we all have an obligation to support them. But don't try to tell us that your taxes cover the cost of building new schools on top of all the other services the county provides.
I hate that the kids were cut out of the mascot/color decision at both of the new schools. At Riverwood M., we started with a list of mascots and school colors and let the students narrow down and vote on the final product. They had some ownership in it and it helped transition many upset kids into a new school and build that community. We had an airbrush artist come and paint it up on the wall. It is a shame that opportunity is gone for these kids. Yes, it is still just a mascot, but you have to remember that for the longest time, there were only 5 high schools here. Tradition runs deep and it would have been nice if the students could have started their own tradition with this. STUDENTS, not random citizens... BTW...I am glad some of you "newcomers" have found a way to live with us awful "natives". I am sure it was painful!:jester:
right but if we ever get a Riverwood HS they will have no say it will follow suit with the middle school!
Ok you're disqualified... you over ran your allotted response time... Throw it out... :jester::jester:
I imagine the person telling you this was not a native here according to the dictionary and is quite the opposite (alien) or is a defined newcomer....(synonyms: stranger, outsider, outlander). I am... and always will be... a Johnston County (1010-Cleveland Rd) Native....even if I move to another county or state one day and live there for three years or more. (Notice Thee Avatar!) And this "HomeGirl" has many friends that have moved here through the years that take pride in the heritage of this place they too call home. Also, I am proud to be a part of a generation of Cleveland Rams....my mother graduated from Cleveland, I attended Cleveland and my son (now in college) also attended Cleveland. No matter where you live or go, there is a certain amount of conformity that you will face, though it doesn't mean you like it. (My youngest played t-ball for a local team named the "Tarheels" which is not the "team of choice" in my immediate family..Just yelling "Go Heels" was not pleasant but I supported my son and his team)! I welcome changes and ideas that create positive impact on this community (and it's schools) but I really don't see where the mascot and color change will serve a "great purpose". Why not take pride in your community and support the next generation of Rams instead?:?::?::?:
I just want to clarify for some of the posters that I did suggest putting a mascot choice and colors choice to a student vote..I think, like another poster, that that would have been a wonderful way to help the students transition to a new school, or the idea of a new school. Also, I never EVER stated that the locals or natives are awful, although I could probably be convinced that a few are after reading PolentaRdMafia's post, which was a little short on that good ole southern hospitality thing. And I do understand the need or desire of those who have lived here a long time to honor the local history by incorporating the ram and Carolina Blue (sorry--if it walks like a duck... :jester: )into the local school--which has already been done at the middle school. I grew up in a very small, rural area with a very rich history that is just really neat. But there were no jobs there so unfortunately most of the young people there have had to leave. If they came here, it is to work to put food on the table for their families with an honest day's work. How can that mean they are so terrible that some of you hate them because they were born on the other side of the Mason-Dixon line? At least they did come here to work. I really don't understand the animosity toward the idea of putting this issue to a public or student vote or open floor discussion, especially if it is not that big of a deal, as some others have stated. It seems the opposite, though, that it IS a big deal, which may be why it wasn't put out for public discussion before a decision was reached. Why is asking to have some input, however small, into your child's or neighborhood's new school, the most public and visible parts of it in a sense, only ok if your family line goes back five generations in the local area? I was thinking that it would have been kind of neat if they had kept one thing but changed the other...a combined past/future representation. Maybe still be the rams but a different color (some of you surely would rather wear red...or a darker blue at least, lol!) Or same color but now a different mascot. But the people in charge didn't seem to think anyone's opinion other than their own was worth anything...that includes oldtimers as well as newcomers, because they didn't ask for input from anyone publicly.
Do the kids have any idea that the mascot is honoring history? This sounds like grown-up drama and the kids probably just want to have something cool as their mascot. I can see where some kids may want to choose something other than the middle school mascot simply for the fun of picking it. Not because they want to disrespect the history of the community. :?
I don't understand what the big deal is about school colors/ mascots. I guess I'm just an oddball. I hated my school colors in high school - blue and orange. I think I thought about it for 2 seconds and didn't care after that.
Sorry, sounds like a buncha whining to me. The decision has been made, correct? Might as well like it or lump it at this point. And find something more important to get your underwear in a bunch about. But that's just me. 8)
To be fair, this is the board of "getting your underwear in a bunch about nothing important" so they did come to the right place about it
