Punishment to fit the "crime"

If there is one thing I CANNOT stand - it's wasted food. I worked for a company that fed 10,000 employees 24 hours a day. The company knew it had to do something about food waste - what people didn't eat and what never even left the hot-plate. They partnered with a local pig farm - the company got bacon, ham, etc while the farmer got for free food for the pigs. And we're talking good food, too.

Why can't the the school district do this? Spread the joy among local farmers and in return have the farms available for field trips or have the farmers come in for talks and presentations.

And here I thought with all the brainwashing it was about the Children!!!!!!! Why does a school need a profit center and if it is indeed a profit center why are tax dollars used to subsidize it?

 

I think having fast food in the schools is one of the stupidest ideas I've ever heard! We're always hearing about trying to make the school lunch as healthy as possible, then they go and throw in fast food???? What's wrong with this picture? My kids are only in elementary, so I haven't had to deal with that yet, when does it start, middle or high school?

 

I don't know what exactly the OP means by fast food, but I know when I attended high school there was a fast food line. That line is not what we all think fast food is. It is a line with the good spicy chicken sandwiches, the delivered pizza, and the seasoned french fries. Most of the rich/popular kids ate this food on a daily basis, along with a sweet tea. The other line served the normal, on monthly menu foods.

Maybe I'm just old and out of the loop about school lunches, but my kids (they are 26 and 24 now) used to pack lunches. We could not afford to pay for school lunches. We knew what food they were packing. Yes, I know they could have trashed it or traded it or whatever, but if they ever bought anything in the cafeteria, it would have been with their own money. Same with the clothes; if they felt the need to be with the "in" crowd wearing expensive clothes, sneakers, backback, etc., it was on their diime. It was learned quickly that one could have a much larger wardrobe from consignment/thrift shops.

Don't school kids pack lunches anymore?

 

The only issue I have with school lunch is that they give my 12 YO the same amount he ate in elementary school and charge more money. He comes home starving every day.........:?

Do we know for sure the schools don't do this? When I worked with the DOC, we did this, so it may be standard in the school system, I don't know.

Uh, sandwiches, pizza, french fries.......if that isn't fast food, what do you consider fast food??

 

Well, its different than what i was expecting. I was expecting Wendy's, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, stuff like that, brought to the cafeteria. Still, the idea is strange to me. I don't see the purpose, other than to shut up the kids who complain about lunch room food.

Forgot my license... guess what.... ticket driving without a license... go to court show them my license was valid, ok sir thank you pay your court fees outside...

I agree with your gripe. Who cares if he has his ID or not. He has money to pay for something that is clearly for sale. Sell it!! The price of food in these lines is not reduced or subsidized by the school. If he was not a student at the school, he would not be allowed in the cafeteria to begin with.

 

Sorry, Hat. I don't see this as a punishment. I see it as a natural consequence. From kindergarten on, kids are being taught personal responsibility and accountability (and Thank God!!). Not being more careful with and keeping track of an ID, esp in a HS setting should have some sort of negative result. If my son had lost his passport in Europe last year, they wouldn't say "Oh, it's OK. Come on in, just bring it next time!" Well, maybe when they were going to France, buncha pansies. Anyways, the kid is still getting to eat

Have the kid bring a Bag Lunch, very simple. My kids bring lunch to school, it's what they want it's cheap and they eat it, no waste.:nopity:

 

it wasn't intended to be comedic. Again, I had two major points..

1. Finding an appropriate way to ensure students have IDs..and if they've been at school all day before lunch, it seems logical to presume they're going to be a WJHS student [B during [/B]lunch.

2. Pointing out the waste of food, which we paid for, but cannot be served elsewhere and the loss of income/profit to the school by the nonsale of discretionary items.

As for no discretionary items and school uniforms, I'm all for it.

So the fact that the student had to go to the "common student" line rather than the "special student line" is upsetting you? It's hard to see that as a punishment. But in any case, why do you have to have an ID for one and not the other? As for the food waste, what ever happened to the homeless shelters?
