That's why I always arm myself with a corn on the cob in one hand and a turkey leg in the other. You can't be too safe.

No kidding, that deep fried HoHo will make a mess in your pocket. I'd opt for the mouth instead of the pocket.

Deep fried HoHo may not stop a heart blockage, but at least halt a bullet. :jester:

Seriously, why doesn't the State Fair have metal detector gates up at the gates to walk through? When you go to a RBC event or something like the air shows, they don't even allow pocket knives and make you empty your pockets in front of them. Isn't that really basic security principles there?

Sounds like it's time for that. They have had gang problems, fights and if I'm not mistaken I think I remember a shooting out there in the past.

They do have the metal detectors at most gates..not all of them.

Many years ago I went to the fair and about 20 minutes after leaving one area there was a kid shot almost in the exact spot I was standing. Kinda strange to think about.

I told my husband about this earlier today and he said that was a reason why he wasn't worried about whether we go to the fair or not and why he would not let me and DD go by ourselves.

The State should not allow lax security to become a precursor to a tragic event. There are a number of State Troopers out on Blue Ridge and Hillsborough making sure that motorists going to and passing by the State Fair stay safe. However, what about within the gates? There should be tighter security for such a highly populated event as the Fair. One armed, deranged person could snap and potentially take out dozens of fairgoers in just seconds. Every way in should be monitored and guarded against any type of weapon. Even those with conceal carry permits should not be allowed into such a setting where security and law enforcement have the capacity to maintain order.

It is either secure or it is not. Binary proposition, same as pregnancy. Yes, there are a few gates that screen. If perpetrators know this, they can always let each other know and avoid the hard screening areas.
As for a "target of opportunity", anyone, deranged or terrorist minded, can cause an incident there, and get their 15 minutes of fame. These days, the lack of security is enough to keep us away from the fair. Don't see our going any time soon.

Two years ago, my friend got 'mugged' in the parking area. They got her money and cell phone etc... so it has made me think twice about leaving once it is dark.

My main reason for not going is all of the funk going around. I know someone who took her child yesterday and he had been diagnosed with the flu on Friday evening. 2 days and he's completely over it? I think not.
