I just registered a vehicle without a safety inspection. The folks at the license plate agency told me I don't need one until I renew the tag next year (I overheard the same Q&A last time I was there- different clerk, same answer). DMV's website says I have to get a three day temp tag to get it inspected before I can get a tag issued, but I got one anyway. I don't need DMV's stormtroopers rappeling from black helicopters and bustin' in my door at 3am...what should I do?!?
You should be good until the date on the registration. While they convert to the new system, they aren't making any car get inspected more than once in a year. So if that car had a current inspection sticker by the previous owner you're good until the renewal date.
We just went through this last week. Inspection from the previous owner was good through next July and they made us get it inspected anyhow.
Don't know what your circumstance was. I have bought two cars in the past 6 weeks and haven't had to inspect either one. Both have next inspection date matching the registration renewal. His registration say's he's good. They didnt make him get it inspected to register it. I think he's good.
I take it back, they did let us register it without the new inspection, but they would not let us put a tag on it. We had to go have it inspected then return the next day to get the tag. This was at the Lillington office. I also had issues with the Fuquay DMV issuing my husband a driver's license, but that's just another issue. *sigh
It didn't have a sticker, but I suppose it could have been inspected under the new system. I think I'll err to the side of caution and get it inspected anyway.
