Never heard of them and DH's company is involuntarily switching us as of Jan 1 from Cigna. I am NOT happy. Of course our premiums and deductibles have gone up as well. I found their website, but that tells me squat about them as far as customer satisfaction. Anybody got them?
I have had them 4 years and have been happy with them. They are supposedly up there with Blue Cross in that most doctors accept them. I can totally relate to the premiums, mine went up 16% this year. All others were about the same though. I figured I would stay with them one more year and I will be looking at other options next year.
Thank you, that makes me feel a little better. I don't like suprises, and this was a big one. We've been with Cigna since 1994. :?
I have United Health Care and love them. I have never had any problems, and they provide great insurance to me. I believe my parents have them as well, and have had them for 20 or so years. I have never heard of anyone having problems with them.
No. Why would I? I don't work in healthcare, we've had the same insurer since 94, ever since DH started with this company. As a result, I've never heard of them. 8)
It depends on the plan your husbands company goes with how well you will like them. When we first signed up with them they were fine. I did, however, have to switch doctors because my doctor no longer accepted that insurance as they do not like to pay. The latest plan we are on with UHC is a total joke.
Cool....but they are large and typically in the news for various reasons. I've never owned a Ford but I've heard of them. 8)
LOL! Sorry, their name has just never registered with me before, never needed it to. Of course I've heard of of Blue Cross, and some others, this one just didn't "stick" apparently.
We have them, but fortunately haven't had to use them much since we were switched last September. We did however have to switch pediatricians. Which was a BIG deal. Still not happy about that.
Wasn't there a thread on here a couple of years ago about some kind of flak with United Health Care and Wake Med?
I hate UHC! I have it on my kids through ex's work. My son has been going to the same eye specialist since he was 18 months old. He was diagnosed with horizontal congenital nystagmus. His sperm donor's company switched from CIGNA to UHC and has caused all kinds of headaches. His eye specialist accepts most insurance except UHC. I had to go through all kinds of crap to get it to cover his appointments and glasses. It's considered a "SPECIALIST" hello! Every time he goes to the eye doctor, I pay the copay and they still send me a bill saying they don't cover this or that. Then we have to get all kinds of paper work filled out each time to dispute them. It's a pain in the butt! They are the ONLY insurance we have had over the years that we have a problem covering his needs.
Today I called Garner/Raleigh Pediatrics to see if I could switch from Growing Child, and since they don't take United Healthcare, I'm going to have to find someone else. Other that that, we've never had trouble with United Healthcare.
I had them for 5 years thru a former employer. From a consumer standpoint, I loved them. I was on a plan that covered 100% of expenses and my Rx cost me $20. But apparently, they are very slow to pay and sometimes just flat out won't pay physicians so you will find that a lot of doctor offices will not accept United. And yes, they were the ones that had a fiasco with Rex and/or Wake Med and the hospital let the contracts with United expire because of non-payment so patients with United Insurance were not covered for services at the hospital.
UHC did have a big blow up with WakeMed several years ago. They termed the hospital contract and as a result, many of the local physician groups who used WakeMed then termed their contracts with UHC. It left a very bad taste in the physician community's mouth. UHC made nice with WakeMed but some of the doctors refused to rejoin. Customer Service was outsourced to another country and most members were not pleased with the service. They tried to vamp up service in the past couple of years; not sure how successful it has been. As for the huge premium increases with insurance companies, one of many reasons for them is the doctor/hospitals who demand higher reimbursement. They threaten to term their contracts so the insurers have to grant an increase. That increase gets passed along to the consumers. It's an evil cycle. I worked in that field with a major insurance company for many many years so can attest to the fact that it's not just greedy insurance companies at fault. Another thing to keep in mind is that in many cases, the contract with the employer and insurance company is as a third party administrator. In other words, they hire the insurance company to handle the administrative and customer service tasks, but the actual claim dollars are funded by the employer group themselves. When the insurance company pays a doctor for your visit, it's really coming out of your employer's pocket. That is another reason for the premium increases you see since it's costing your employer more money when you seek medical care.
UHC was what my ex had for the kids and it was a pain in the butt! I had to call them over every thing and was in constant battle with them over paining the claims. Now my experience is different than some because my DH also have insurance on the kids and was constantly fighting UHC over who was primary for their insurance. I had to fight with UHC over every claim that was filed and it took forever. Was glad to not have to deal with them when the ex changed jobs.
We had it for a few years through DH's employer and i was definitely not impressed - you have to stay on the phone to get anything taken care of was my experience.
<sigh> I'm not getting a real warm fuzzy. Ah well, forewarned is forearmed. Thanks for the input!
