Yes, that's true. Late payments on any account can allow them to increase your interest rate. They check your credit report periodically, and if there is anything negative on it, they can raise your rate, even if you have made every payment to them on time. Credit cards are evil. Pay them off as soon as you can.

That's what I was gonna say. The only good credit card is no credit card. I haven't had a cc in well over 15 years. If I can't pay cash I just don't buy it. I learned my lesson the hard way but I learned it nonetheless. I'm not one that can be trusted with a credit card :banghead:

The credit card industry is the biggest money making industry in the U.S.A
We all need to get back to the basics, shop like our grandparents did, no cash means no buy. Like others we learned our lessons years ago and will more than likely (never say never) not use the two we have hidden in the _ _ _ _ _, only for extreme emergency. We have a mortgage, life insurance payments and utilities and the dreaded college tuition payments, which is more than I'd like to have but that's it. I'd love to see this industry go bottoms up, but very doubtful. My 20 year old, who's a full time college student, part time job holder, gets one offer just about every week and has been getting them ever since she turned 18, this is crazy.

I totally agree about using credit cards only if necessary and to pay them off at the end of each month, which is exactly what we did all along until my husband was laid off in February and we had to use it at the Dr.s office etc.,etc.

I agree. Don't be scared of them smelling your bluff - don't bluff! This is all a big game to them, those folks just work in the Cust Serv dept, they are nobody to be scared of. They're phone monkeys.

    phone monkeys :lol:good one!
Let's say I threaten to cancel the card if they don't give me a lower rate and they still will not but cancel it anyway, then what?
I do still need it since a couple of our bills are set up to be paid monthly thru the card, like vonage for example.

give vonage another card or checking acct to draft from.

Very good question. Sounds like you could cut off your nose to spite your face with this maneuver. You could end up with this high interest balance on a card you can't use any more. Read your contract before you start making threats - it may be that canceling the card would make the entire balance due immediately. I still think your best bet is to get another credit card with low or zero interest, transfer the balance, and then put that card away and don't use it any more.
