So, as I posted elsewhere, someone tried to use my BBandT debit card number. It's my own card, not DH's. Their fraud dept. caught it and called me. Card has been canceled. I've checked both my BBandT account and my credit report, nothing else seems to be amiss. I'm still freaked out. Can't for the life of me figure out how my number would have gotten out. I've not lost my card or used it on any weird websites. I always wonder when I use the card at a restaurant or fastfood place. I don't think I will be anymore. Cash it is. :banghead::banghead::banghead:

I heard that some scammers are installing cameras on gas pumps that can see your number when you key it in.

Why would you key anything at a pump? Isn't it just a swipe?

I know you are freaked out....but if everything looks ok, and the bank is in touch with you, it's ok.

Unfortunately now-a-days...it could happen from anywhere you have ever used your debit card....in the last year or so. Once a system has been breached (at Foodlion or JC Penney's or ANYWHERE) where you have used your card, they notify all people who have used a card in their establishment within the last year or 18 months. Companies now do "sweep" if you will, to make sure everyone knows that has done business with them in a certain time frame, that they had someone that worked for them breach security. It's a safety measure. You cancelled your card, your account looks fine, so that's as proactive as you can be. It's an inconvenience indeed, but to me, it's worth it.

It depends on whether you hit debit or credit. Debit cards make you put in the pin.

The number was used to try to get a website membership. Yeah, one of "those" websites". I'm certain I didn't sign up for it, LOL. And no, it wasn't DH either.

You are right, we had to cancel our cards once before because of some breach, can't remember now who it was. And we got a notice once when that laptop got missing with all the veteran's info on it. THAT was fun. This is just weird because it's my own debit card. DH works in the financial industry, used to work directly with ATM's and has warned me repeatedly about not using certain types and definitley don't use it if anything looks tampered with. I always look at those scanner things to see if they look factory. Crooks are getting smarter.

I used mine to pay for airport parking at RDU. The next day I had a small charge on it with one of those sites. Since I only frequent free porn sites I knew it wasn't from me. I had not used that care for several months before that so I knew it was from the parking pay station. There was no skimmer because the charge worked and validated my parking.

Anyway, what they do is run a small charge to a porn site to see if it is approved, then they step it up and go for the big stuff.

That's what I figured, they were trying it to see if it would go through. Thank you BBand T!!! I got the email address they used from the site (bank gave me their number and I called 'em to see WTH?), but BBandT said they don't investigate.

If you are using a debit card, some pumps ask for your PIN.

And if running as credit, I am asked for my zip code.

    yep

I have a sneaking suspicion it was a waiter, that's the last time I used it where it was out of my sight. Either that or some retailer has been hacked. :?

That's pretty common, or possibly a payment processing center like Heartland. That was really big last year, but the true scope of it was not released until way after the indecent. Most banks were affected, but most of them did not take an aggressive role in notifying their customers. SECU is very good about taking a proactive role in credit fraud. If they learn of any possibility or a breach with a vendor, retailer, processor, etc, they will notify the member right away and issue a new card.

My card number was stolen at a redbox in Cameron Village once. It had a skimmer on it and I didn't notice it until I had already swiped it. Then the next day, my bank called to ask me about mysterious charges on my account. Could you believe that they even used it to pay their car insurance? Like sex, be safe before you slide it in....

Glad you are getting closer to figuring it out. I had 3 items hit my account last year and found out they were for renewals of software on our computers.

    Good luck,
    Sherry
