He states that it will add to our deficit. I say if people who are unemployment don't have money to spend that will add to our deficit. If you know anyone who will be affected by this you will truly understand. I am asking people across the country to email this Senator and explain to him how this will affect families. Once I look up his email address I will post it. Please help those who need this money and are seriously trying to get a job. Thanks, Sherry P.S. I get mixed up on affected and effected so please excuse my mistake, if I made one.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/201...ts-expire-sunday-senate-stalemates-extension/ Unemployment insurance and COBRA benefits will expire Sunday for millions of voters because the Senate was unable this week to pass a short-term extension, a failure that reflects partly the partisan gridlock that has stalled the Democratic legislative agenda and partly the Senate rules that allows one lawmaker to block legislation. But the Senate will likely be able to renew them with a Tuesday vote. Democrats are expected to take up a broader bill next week, the second in their “jobs agenda” that will extend the benefits, among many other provisions – including popular tax extenders – for one year. The bill is expected to pass by the end of next week. The latest stalemate, however, produced a rare, late-night partisan floor brawl between two scrappy senators. In the red corner is Sen. Jim Bunning, R-Ky., whose decision not to seek re-election this year has made him a wildcard. He has blocked a $10 billion bill that extends the benefits for 30 days because he wants to lay out how the extension will be paid for, preferably with unallocated stimulus funds. In the blue corner is Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., who, along with other Democrats told Bunning no way because the extension is an emergency and shouldn’t come with any offsets.
Here is the contact page for this Senator: http://bunning.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=Contact.ContactForm Let's try to keep this non-partisan as millions of Americans are effected.
another year? it used to be 6 months. then it got extended. then they extended it some more. now they want to extend it again? what am i missing? sorry, 2 years of unemployment benefits is too much. i mean, this bill is not keeping new people from signing up, is it? it's not keeping people from getting the first 26 weeks, or even the second 26 weeks. how long are we supposed to pay people?
just read the full article. here's why your boy blocked: He has blocked a $10 billion bill that extends the benefits for 30 days because he wants to lay out how the extension will be paid for, preferably with unallocated stimulus funds. oh, how terrible and unthinkable. the guy wants to know where the money is coming from to fund this before he votes to pass it. thinks it should come from unspent stimulus instead of general funds or wherever they were getting it, if they even knew....
I understand that portion but if people cannot spend money the economy goes down. Aren't I thinking it through correctly? Sherry
The unemployment extension is not for a year. It is for 30 days. You are looking at a tax extension, which should be separated from the unemployment extension, in my opinion. Sherry
i suppose. i think it's where you're looking for the answer that's the problem. the government isn't the answer. instead of reloading the teet, they should do things legislatively to ease conditions for businesses so they can produce and hire. more gov't programs won't help. it's spending money we don't have. think about it: if people are out of work, they aren't paying taxes, either, and government collections go down. that means they have less money to work with. so, they spend more money? where are they getting it? borrowing from other countries? borrowing from future production? borrowing from funds from someplace else in the budget? either way, it's money they don't have....
as of june of last year, according to this chart from CNN, there are at least 17 states (north carolina included) that allow for 79 weeks of unemplyment insurance. that's a year and a half...and you think it should be more? http://money.cnn.com/news/storysupplement/economy/unemployment_benefits/index.html
I do believe that taxes are taken out of unemployment either on the front end or at tax time. I am in total agreement with you on creating more jobs. I do think that most getting unemployment would rather have a job. It's a tough position to be in for the government and the citizens. We have age discrimination, which is hurting a large portion of citizens. We have companies who have been around for ever, paid good and are now laying off thousands of people. I'm not sure what the answer is but I do know our citizens who want jobs do not need to be homeless while looking. Sherry
db, It is tough on the job market at the moment. People apply to jobs and never hear a word from employers. People take a job for less money and get laid off again and then the unemployment benefits are less when you are paid less. Sure people should down size but houses are not selling, pawn shops aren't purchasing items like they used too, most people cannot make payments on items because businesses cannot afford to do that anymore, it goes on and on. I've thought about it extensively and cannot come up with a viable solution to this problem. It's humbling to all Americans but we must find a solution that helps both citizens and government. Sherry
but but but...people are dying in the streets!!!!!! that's what the liberal blogs are reporting!!! sensationalism!!!!! emotion!!!!!! feelings!!!!!
I think that unemployment benefits should be a diminishing amount and once the alloted time is over, it's over. That way they are more encouraged to get a job the longer they are out of a job.
Yes, taxes are either w/held each week, or taken at the end of the yr. I use to agree w/ most of what y'all are saying until my DH was layed off and so far has not been able to find ANY employment. He's not just looking in his field - but there is just not anything out there - nobody responds to applications and those that do send a letter saying he's over qualified. Its a difficult situation - never thought we'd be in it thats for sure! Of course it even more frustrating too when you need a job that offers medical benefits. I am very thankful that they have made the extensions and allowances that they have so far. But I certainly know that there are those that just take advantage of the system - sit back and collect and aren't even looking for employment. :banghead:
