our check engine light came on last year and since we lost jobs could not get it fixed.the tranny went and we replaced it and the radiator with borrowed money and now the light was off. i guess it can mean many things. and it passed inspection today.we just paid it off after the tranny blew.

Advance and AutoZone both offer free computer printouts to tell you what the codes are if your service engine light is on, with suggestions for possible fixes. I got mine checked the other day, and there are 2 codes showing - O2 sensor and egr valve. Then it tells 3 or 4 things to try for each one.

Also - we keep saying "check engine" light when we mean "service engine" light. The service engine light is amber, and means there's a problem in the emission control system. The check engine light is red and means stop driving immediately - either the temperature is too high or the oil pressure is too low.
