Does anyone local do this? If you don't know what it is, you can check it out at letterboxing.com or atlasquest.com. I happened to stumble upon it a few weeks ago on another board I frequent, and I've picked up the hobby. My DH says it's gay, lol....but I figure it's a free/cheap hobby and it's getting me out of the house. If anyone else does it, I'd love to hook up and go boxing together. If you don't and you want to get started, let me know...
Do you really? I soooo need a buddy to go with me and do this! Want to get together this weekend sometime and chat about it?
No, not quite. With geocaching, you use a GPS to find the boxes, with letterboxing, no GPS is required. It's just solving clues, kinda like a treasure hunt. Also, with geocaching, once you reach the box, you take a trinket from it, and replace it with another trinket. With letterboxing, you don't take anything. You stamp the boxes logbook with your personal stamp to let the owner know you were there, and then use the owner of the box's stamp to stamp your logbook as proof that you found it.
Wow, Jen, that sounds neat. Let me look at the link shortly and I may join you, if you'll take me. Sherry
We used to do it around the local area after we learned about it in the "My State" magazine. I even went so far as to carve a custom stamp for my family and it was fun, but eventually it lost it's novelty and we stopped doing it. I even did some letterboxing in other towns/states when I'd go visit. That's funny, my husband said the same thing. The Lake Wheeler ones are fun to get, and there are alot at Pullen Park, the airport, and Durham Bulls Park. Have fun LETTERBOXING!
So far I've had fun. I carved my own stamp, and I've even planted a box with a signature stamp. DH rolled his eyes at me the other day when I made him stop off Poole Rd and go into the woods after a box for me....but I don't care...for right now it's something to do, ya know?
Jenn, what are you doing sometime Sunday afternoon? I read about it online but obviously you know much more about it than I do so you'll have to teach me!
I was just looking into this recently. There are suppose to be 3 at Clemmons State Forest. Have you done those?
Sorry PG, didn't see this till now. Are you busy Saturday? NCMom, I haven't, but I plan to do those soon. Yesterday I hiked Fred Bond Park in Cary. I am loving this.....
Y'all know I was totally kidding with my first post on this subject. I couldn't resist. This does sound kinda interesting. How do you find out about upcoming events? DB's wife
DB's wife... A good place to start is atlasquest.com Sign up on the site and read as much as you can. There are events where boxers get together and exchange or hunt stamps together. There is also a listing of where all the boxes are hidden and you can start looking for them. This weekend is actually the first time I met another boxer and went with someone.
