I am all for technology, but I hate that kids will miss the experience of turning pages. I'll never be able to read a book electronically, but that's because I'm a romantic about such things and not because I hate technology. It's probably better that way but I'll never know!
Or how about a laptop for a 6 yr old? Seriously?? She sits in front of the computer or plays video games the WHOLE time she's here on the weekends. Doesn't seem to know how to entertain herself without either of those 2.
My 8 year old keeps asking me for a cell phone because her friends have them. Really? I always tell her I didn't get a cell phone until I was college. (I had a pager in high school - beep beep)
My 11 year old wants one. I may do it for his 12th birthday. He's responsible and LOVES to read, so I see no reason not to. Anything that encourages reading is good in my book. 5 or 6?? I highly doubt it. I had reservations about whether I would enjoy reading on the Kindle, I was worried about losing that "tactile" feeling of turning pages, etc. I forget I'm even reading on it. DH got me the fancy schmancy leather cover with the built in booklight, it's fantastic and with that, it does feel like you have a book in your hands.
I'm trying to cut it back. Being on the computer or playing video games from the time you get up til the time you go to bed for a 6 yr old, is not good.
I'd go for it! That's awesome that he loves to read. And my son will be 6 in March and he's not reading beyond "cat" and "dog" at the moment so tell your son we'll buy his old Kindle from him in 6 years!
