Wings Over Wayne Air Show 2011 is April 16th and 17th and will feature the Thunderbirds, which haven't been at Seymour Johnson for about four years. The F-15 Demo Team will perform, Tora! Tora! Tora! and several other aerial performances. Plenty of aircraft on the ground to look at. Also, Aaron Tippin is scheduled to perform one of those days...Saturday, I believe...and yet another presently unknown country artist. They are now on FB (they're trying to get to 1,000 likes) and Twitter and have the info on www.wingsoverwayneairshow.com. Apparently, they are now just doing the two-day show every other year, so it'll be 2013 before WOW will be held again. Just a FYI...
Cool...thanks for posting! Just showed my 8 year old and he is EXCITED!! Promised I would take him even if his Daddy isn't home.
While it's fun for the community I worked security for the event the two years I was stationed there and that was hell. But I am going to try to be there this year as I haven't been in many years.
I'll bet we have warm weather that day. I have been twice and both times it was superHOT out! We forgot hats for the boys the first time and ended up paying $36 for two hats for them...then they got tired and cranky and we left. Kids...:boxing: Awesome show though...we will definitely go back!! Thanks for the reminder!!
Ah memories...Many folks don't realize that the flightline is usually kept spotless to prevent foreign object damage to jet engines, so after airshows it always took a good half day of all hands picking up ciggie butts, candy wrappers and used gum before we could get back to flight ops. Fun stuff!
They've added Tracy Lawrence for the Sunday concert (Aaron Tippin is on Saturday) and both are free. The schedule on www.wingsoverwayne.com says that both concerts will be after the Thunderbirds' performance; Tippin on Sat and Lawrence on Sun. Also, there will be a MiG-17 demonstration this year. Here's a linked article from the Wings Over Wayne FB page: www.carolinaweeklynews.com/id40.html The MiG-17 was known as the most agile fighter in the world prior to the F-16 Fighting Falcon that the USAF Thunderbirds use in their shows. Should be an exciting line-up of aerial demonstrations.
They have a helluva line up, Tracy Lawrence and Aaron Tippin notwithstanding (OK, I don't know either of them but they're not my primary focus at this particular event!). Also, this could very well be one of the last opportunities to see some of the WWII warbirds in flight. They have become so rare that it's almost a crime to fly them. I'm very interested in the MiG, but the F-4 Phantom is the one I want to see just one last time...ain't nuthin' like a pair of J79s at full song..."in thrust we trust".
It's not stated as part of the line-up, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a mock dogfight with the F-4 and the MiG-17. The MiG pilot often engages in aerial combat demos with F-4s at air shows. It would be great to see the two in the air at the same time. I have a fondness for the Phantoms, too. I grew up about 20 miles from the base during the seventies and eighties and routinely saw the F-4s flying overhead. Also, those heavy smoke trails from the B-52s that were stationed out there, as well.
Just thought I'd bring topic ttt for a reminder that air show is this coming weekend for those interested in attending. Berkeley and Oak Forest gates will be open to the pubic with extended green lights to make entering and exiting easier. After the show, the Slocomb gate will be open for exiting traffic. For more info...www.wingsoverwayne.com. Free admission, free parking, free shuttles. Not so cheap food and beverages, but that goes with these types of events. No more expensive than the RBC Center or similar. Free concerts, too. Aaron Tippin on Sat; Tracy Lawrence on Sun. One little tidbit that has worked for me before. If the traffic seems congested, one little sneaky way to cut in line is to exit Hwy. 70 @ Spence Avenue and drive down to Elm Street. Take a left onto Elm and then an immediate right on Berkeley and you're at the main gate. Law enforcement will be handling traffic and the Wayne Sheriff's Office will be doing helicopter detail with live traffic updates on one of the AM frequencies...think it's 1680AM.
