Besides losing my mind, I can't find Cake yeast, like fresh active yeast.....not the dried powdered stuff. I need it for a recipe for Christmas cookies and I can't find it anywhere!!! Places I've called/tried Lowe's Foods 42/50, Food Lion 40/42, Walmart (40/42 & 70), Kroger on 70 in Garner, several pizza shops, Clayton Cafe & bakery, Whole Foods in Raleigh.... Does anyone know where I can find this stuff? Usually was sold by Fleishmanns or Red Star. TYIA
All my recipes I use for yeast dough call for fresh yeast since they are German recipes,I always substitute 1 pkg. of dry yeast for the fresh and never had any problems. Here is a picture of a filled yeast braid I made using dry yeast a couple of weeks ago:
The Red Star cake yeast isn't sold in any local stores and because of its refrigeration needs is not even available to buy directly from them. However here's a link to a conversion chart on their website that will help you determine how much active dry yeast to use instead of the cake type. http://www.redstaryeast.com/lessons-yeast-baking/yeast-conversion-table
Hught, you crack me up! Annette....I'm drooling on my iPad....we need to have a 4042 food porn party :hurray:
My mom tried to substitute dry, and for some reason itwasnt as moist. I'm forced to try it myself it seems....maybe it was the humidity of florida that dried it out. Who knows. Here goes nothing! Thanks ya'll
