Public records show officials feared landowners' reaction to CSX project “Project Scorpion” started in April 2015. That’s when the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina first notified Johnston County Economic Development Director Chris Johnson of a mystery project – one that could bring jobs and transportation infrastructure to North Carolina. But, by late January, that project – unveiled to be Jacksonville, Florida-based CSX Corporation’s Intermodal Terminal – was in limbo after eminent domain fears caused some property owners to speak out against the terminal. http://www.bizjournals.com/triangle...records-show-officials-feared-landowners.html
While I was scrolling through FB on my iPod yesterday there was a FB page for the land owner trying to stop the CSX from buying the land.
JoCo blew it. I am not a huge fan of economic development projects that steamroll through without regards to school capacity, traffic congestion, etc., but this one made sense. Plain and simple.
I'm afraid I was wrong on this one. Evidently, Selma is hell bent on being a crossroads with a gas terminal. But on the bright side, they do have a vibrant antique business, JR cigarette outlet for those heading north, and a t@tty bar.
It must be those antiques drawing the "wrong crowd" in. Certainly not the t@tty bar that is for sure.
Without Selma, many would be walking. They serve all of eastern NC for Gasoline. Within the last four years or so a terminal in Apex wanted to add a tank and had deal with a lot of opposition. I could only imagine the trouble that would be encountered if a town wanted to build an entire tank farm.
Smithfield-Selma Chamber supports placement of CSX Terminal in Johnston County http://www.smithfieldselma.com/news...-placement-of-csx-terminal-in-johnston-county Too little, too late? I wonder why the chamber waited until after the primary election to make this statement?
Clayton Chamber supports placement of CSX Terminal in Johnston County The Clayton Chamber of Commerce has adopted the following statement concerning the CSX Inter modal Terminal. We encourage you to contact our local, state, and federal representatives and share your support for the project as it will have a significant economic impact, not only in Johnston County, but the entire state and eastern seaboard. Clayton Chamber supports placement of CSX Terminal in Johnston County March 21, 2016 The Mission of the Clayton Chamber of Commerce is to promote and inform our membership as well as our community of new economic growth opportunities. Standing behind this mission, the Chamber Board of Directors “fully supports the placement of the CSX Inter modal terminal in Johnston County.” Our responsibility includes researching the project and all of its many facets, and that research has determined that CSX has greatly benefited the communities into which they expanded, as well as their surrounding areas. While the project brought new job opportunities within CSX, other related businesses also relocated to the region to take advantage of the HUB. In addition, the local community saw more investment in roads and infrastructure. Our Chamber supports such growth! The Clayton Chamber of Commerce is fully committed to ensuring that our members, our community and this county have full benefit of the information needed to advance our economic growth. With that commitment in mind, we support this project and look forward to the strong economic impact it will bring to Johnston County and our great state. It really saddens me how people like the governor look at things like the "Save the Farm" Facebook page and see the "likes" as real support. A major project like this should only be voted on by local people, Johnston County or a smaller subset of that. Those "likes" that support the "Save the Farm" page could be from anywhere in the world. Do we let China dictate what we do in JoCo? There's actually services out there where you can pay to have likes generated on a page. I could go pay a few hundred bucks and have a page that says "Demolish the Farm" get 100,000 likes in just a few days. Will the governor listen to that when all the Chinese people like my page? It's really stupid. At the end of the day, it should be something that is voted on by the local people maybe, like a referendum or something. I bet the support for the project would be way higher than most people think.
Since the law allows CSX to use the courts to condemn property without approval from the Governor or the county, it is more of a political move to voice opposition while knowing it can go on as planned and they will get the best of both worlds politically speaking.
I think you are right Wayne. My buddy says they all support it but can't win votes by supporting eminent domain. Better to let CXS be the bad guy, then support it.
