    The Planning Board is going to recommend denial to the Board of Commissioners.

    I drive by the new Publix every day. This morning, I noticed the permanent lights are up and on inside. the walls look like they are painted. So, progress is being made, but still months from opening I'd guess. I'm not sure what the plan is for the 2 entrances (1 for deliveries) off NC 42 is. they have installed a large drainage pipe at the bottom of that deep gully. Not sure if they will start backfilling with dirt, or if a prefab type of bridge will be brought in. There is still a lot of work there regardless.

    A new commercial development is proposed for a busying area along Interstate 40 in Johnston County.

    Patrick Riley, of Cary-based Bedrock Investment Group, has submitted plans with Johnston County government to rezone a little more than 43 acres off the 11700 block of Cleveland Road for general business use to build a "commercial flex space," according to county documents. The land sits near Interstate 40 and has a Garner address.

    Riley did not respond to requests seeking comment on what he plans to do with the land and a construction timeline. The value of the land, which spreads across four parcels, is a little shy of $1.2 million, according to Johnston County tax records.

    The zoning classification "will allow the site to host a mix of retail, office, light industrial and service businesses," the application for the rezoning says. "The requested conditional zoning balances a mix of land-use and density suited for an interstate interchange while still prohibiting uses that would be inappropriate for the nearby elementary school."


    West View Elementary School, at 11755 Cleveland Rd., is located across the street from the site for the proposed development.

    Directly north of the site is an area heavy with retail where I-40 meets Highway 42. The area includes a Lowe's Home Improvement store, Walmart Supercenter and a mix of restaurants and hotels.

    With close proximity to Raleigh and other burgeoning Wake County communities, Johnston County, with its surging population, has become a hotbed of investment in residential, commercial and industrial real estate.

    Johnston County has a population above 242,000, according to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau. That's rapid growth from 2010, when the county had an estimated population of just shy of 169,000.

    No, different property. The one requesting rezoning is north of Veterans Parkway and the property wraps around Cleveland Fire Station 2. The one from the TBJ article is a mile or so south of that. Commercial flex space is a popular plan for real estate, I guess.

    Am I alone in the opinion that those 'flex' spaces are kinda ugly. Bland and no aesthetic appeal?

    • Eastfield Crossing is a 3 million-square-foot mixed-use development in Selma.

    At 6995 Veterans Parkway (along with several surrounding properties), I saw they're clearing the land. I'm pretty sure they're building self-storage facilities. The property owner's business name is linked to two people who are linked to many other "919 Storage" businesses.
