ODD? Oppositional defiant disorder? Is there an effective med for that? or really any effective treatment? "Overdiagnosed" is not the same as "doesn't exist." I think a parallel in physical medicine is fibromyalgia. I think it's overdiagnosed to the point where some people do not believe it is a real ailment, making it hard on people who really have it. But I think most parents really are doing the best they can, and we should not be too quick to judge others.
Great observation, Grandma. I agree. Yes, it's "Oppositional Defiant Disorder." The recommended approach to treating this disorder is individual therapy. There is a type of therapy called Reality Therapy that tends to work well with teens who have this diagnosis. It teaches taking responsibility for your behavior and is very confrontational, challenging all the excuses the client dreams up for his/her behavior. I don't think meds are typically used unless there is a mood problem like anger, depression, etc.
Ken, Oh, since you put it so elequently, you must be right. I'll just throw out all that graduate school crap and the countless hours of seminars and start telling the parents to just beat their kids when they step out of line. I'm sure that will make the world a better place. Cheers, Snuff
Nope. I sucked at chemistry; biology was my forte (that is a word which means strength, in case you didn't know). At least I did learn where to place commas in my sentences so that they make sense. "No school taught you..." means that I didn't learn it at school at all. Is that what you were trying to say? No, (comma!) I didn't think so. Let me no ifn youd lahk me two shaer eny mor of my lernin widja.
OK, for all non believers, I was a nonbeliever also, until my 9yr old started having extreme problems concentrating. He is not hyper and is well behaved, he just has problems concentrating and processing info. It didn't start suddenly, but we had attributed it to being a kid. But when he started in 3rd grade he could not complete his work. I had alot of problems keeping him focused on homework and work he had not finished at school. I thought he was lazy or daydreaming, but as time went on I realized he wanted to finish. He was overwhelmed with the growing pile of unfinished work. He would cry and say I'm stupid, I just can't do it, when in fact he is very bright. After months of trying everything else, testing, and conferences it was determined he has ADD and was started on medicine. The medicine does not make him a zombie and he says it helps so much. He is completing his work and feels better about himself. He is much happier and although I once did not believe, I want to do the right thing for my child. He does not take the medicine on days he does not go to school, it is not a babysitter. I thank God I had an open mind and didn't let my past beliefs affect the rest of his life.
Ken, Wow, you really are an expert on just about everything, aren't you? Musical instruments, muppets, Matel toys, psychopharmacology. You even seem to know more about my nick name than I do! Truly, we're not worthy. However, the more I think about it, the more you remind me of the Fed-Ex commercial guy; you're always wrong. 1) In all my experience, for example, I have never heard of a psychiatrist prescribing Lithium to a child. I'm not sure why they don't, but I imagine that it has something to do with the risks involved with that medication. (What, you mean psychiatrists are actually concerned about the welfare of their clients?) 2) your tranquilizer dart comment, aside from being hyperbole out the yin yang, suggests that you are trying to convince us all that psychiatrists are running around elementary classrooms waiting for a child to exhibit some energy and then zap them with tranquilizers. Well, nothing could be farther from the truth. Most children prescribed stimulants (not tranquilizers - wrong again) for ADHD are brought to the psychiatrist by parents who are pleading for help because nothing else has worked. They are frustrated; teachers are frustrated; the child is frustrated. It's a "last resort" intervention, used very cautiously. 3) So I was taking the "better life through chemistry" out of context? Sure, that had nothing to do with your obvious implication that psychiatrists are doping up children to keep them in control. Again, a totally false assertion. Medicating a child with a disordered brain GIVES them control of their lives. 4) As for the user name, it happens to be a nick name I picked up in college. It has nothing to do with Sesame Street. I would tell you where it came from, but the story just isn't that interesting, and it's NOYB. Since, as far as I know, the name was never written, I suppose I can spell it any why I choose, if that's ok with you. 5) I concentrated in health psychology in my training with a specialization in cognitive-behavioral interventions for medical disorders, which amounts to using behavioral interventions for problems like headaches, high blood pressure, excessive muscle tension, teeth grinding, and even ADHD so that the patients would not have to take as much medication, or in some cases, any medication. So, I am hardly the gung hoe dope-em-up-to- control-them advocate that you seem to think I am. My philosophy is all about giving the client as much control as possible. If you would like to have a serious discussion about this issue, try giving those of us who disagree with you a little respect for our opinions, and dispense with the Rush Limbaugh approach. That would be a good start. Snuff
Oh...let's just drug them all into little mindless, slobbering zombies. This way they can all vote for Hillary and fit right in! Resistance is futile. Take your pill. Will that be the red one or the blue one?
ANOTHER disorder?!?!?!? You have GOT to be kidding me!?!? ODD? Give me a flippin' break! It's called a rebelious teenager, you hack! Normal, average, everyday teenager. I have yet to see one NOT go through this stage in their life. They know everything....Mom and Dad are the enemy, etc, etc. Please....for the love of God....stay away from my children. If one moron tries to tell me that my children need medication to "help" them with a so-called disorder of this....whatever you want to call it this week......they will not like the parent that comes out. I am trying to keep my children OFF of drugs. You can feed yours all of the pills you want, just keep them away from mine. The last thing I want is for your kid to try to sell mine their nice pills they get from Mommy and Daddy. Trying to keep drugs out of the schools and the worst pushers are the parents, doctors and school officials! Unbeleiveable!
I've often wondered the same thing Ken. I went to school in a small school system...the people I began 1st grade with were the same people I walked across the stage with at graduation 12 years later. So given how prolific these "diseases" are these days, wouldn't it stand to reason that it existed when I was in school? But thinking back, I can't remember one single person exhibiting the behaviours associated with ADD ADHD. So where were these "diseases" back then? I have my own opinions about these "disorders", all having to do with today's lack of discipline, and the advent of multiple video game platforms, the internet, and a million TV channels, which I won't go into but I'm sure most of y'all catch my drift. Guess y'all can sign me a "non-believer" as well.
Apparently being a child is a disorder in and of itself. I like to think of them as my little STD's.
It did, over 30 years ago they tried to get my brother on Ritalin (I believe), my parents fought it, they now probably regret that.
They are the ones who dropped out of school in the 8th grade to work on a farm or in a factory. Not so easy to find those jobs these days.
How come a logical question posted on here always turns into a slam fest ?? Give it a rest folks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The reason for this is because people have nothing better to do out here in the sticks except for slaming others. Then they wonder why there kids turn out so damn rotten. Sure you don't need a pill for that now do you, it's hereditary
ADHD My son has not been diagnosed as ADHD, although he has many of the symptoms. I really am against the meds for him so we have tried eliminating all artificial colors and flavors as the Feingold diet suggests. It really has made a big difference in his self control. For those people who think it is a problem with the parenting of these kids, you think that because you don't have one. We have consistently spanked our son from the time he was 2 and it does not have much effect. We still punish him for his misbehavior but it really is out of his control. My younger son responds well to the punishment. Some kids really do have medical conditions that make them act that way.
Off TOPIC: I would love to know where all the pencils that I send my son to school go. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME?
