    Funny, Only responses to my add are the 5 scams I have gotten so far. lI can make millions with the cashiers checks I keep getting offered for the car I have for sale. All I gotta do is cash all these cashier checks and send the people the difference. :D Dont these knucklehead scammers even read the add ?!?! I am LOOKING for parts, not SELLING a car! Somebody has to keep falling for it, or they wouldnt even bother to try scamming people.

    I'm up to 15 responses, none of them have been legit. Even got one from Belfast UK today :D

    Seems like there should be a way to stop them from doing it. I dunno, its frustating as heck.

    Classifed Ad information:
    ================

    First, addressing the use of this technique:

    Please note that this will not work and is not an appropriate solution to prevent receiving SPAM or SCAM e-mail when you post an ad on 4042.com. When you post an ad, you enter an e-mail address in a form, and that address is NOT displayed when the ad is viewed on the site.

    [IMG]

    As shown the example above, instead of displaying the e-mail address, a REPLY TO AD link is displayed. Any replies to an ad is handled by a form, which prevents direct access to the e-mail address. An example is listed below:

    [IMG]

    In summary, using the 4042.com Classifieds does not directly expose your address to site visitors/spammers/scammers. Reply to your ad MUST go through the Reply to Ad form. So it is important that:

    1. When posting an ad you supply a VALID e-mail address in the form. If the address you provide is not correct, then you will not receive ANY replies to your ad.

    2. Do NOT post your e-mail address in the body of the classifed ad description. If you list it there, you WILL expose it directly to site visitors/scammers/spammers.

    When posting an ad on 4042.com, it is very likely that you will receive bogus replies. We have documented this on the link below, which is displayed prior to every ad that is posted on 4042.com:
    http://www.4042.com/4042_Classifieds/4042_classifieds.html

    Our classified ad system, like others on the Internet, is routinely scanned by automated software systems which automatically fill in the REPLY TO AD form in hope that you will respond to their generic scam "offer to purchase", and at which point a real person (scum of the earth) will step in and try to complete the rip-off.

    Steps We are Taking:
    ====================

    To throw a "speed bump" in the path of the automated scanning programs (which not only REPLY to ads, but also SUBMIT ads), we are in the process of implementing a CAPTCHA routine in the 4042.com Classified Ad system. If you want the details on CAPTCHA, you can find it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha

    The short version - when an ad is submitted or a reply is made, an image will be displayed of a "code." That code will have to be properly entered before the classified ad will be successfully submitted or a reply to an ad accepted. The image below shows an example of the CAPTCHA for the "Reply to Ad."

    [IMG]

    Our hope is that this will cut down drastically on the automated SCAM replies to ads posted on 4042.com. We are in the final testing of the CAPTCHA system and hope to make it available very soon.

    This is what the CAPTCHA system is designed to stop.

    Scams, etc

    Well, once the CAPTCHA system or whatever it is called is installed I may consider posting another add. I can assure you that I wont give it another go until then. I've never seen such crap in my mailbox in my life. I'm up to 45 different people trying to scam me, and not a single legit reply.

    Unbelievable. I should have just walked down the street handing out my E-mail address.

    Can you PLEASE delete my add, the delete feature doesnt seem to work. Its #50501 about the Escort / Mercury Tracer.

    Thanks Webbie, All scam E-mails have stopped since you removed my add. Its a shame that those clowns have to mess up my favorite website classifieds.

    Even though annoying, it was kinda funny. One of the emails I got said they wanted my item for their baby and their neighbor's children. It also said they wanted a dozen of the same item. I was selling maternity clothes!! :lol: All of the emails I got said something stupid that automatically told me they were scams. Plus, whoever writes those things cannot spell worth a crap. No, I'm not the grammar queen, but sheesh, these emails were pitiful!
