there are several disc golf courses around raleigh...there's one on kaplan drive, off western blvd. near nc state. there's one at cedar hills park off millbrook rd in north raleigh. there are also public courses in durham and burlington. the ones in raleigh are part of city parks, so i guess you might could find out something about them through parks and rec.

i can tell you from personal experience that they used to do a casually organized $1 entry "random doubles" tourney each tuesday at cedar hills and each thursday at kaplan dr....sadly, i haven't been in a few years, but i hear they still do them. it's just random regular people who show up and have fun. tournaments usually start around 5:30 or six....you can just show up and play.

as far as johnston county goes, i'm not sure. the only one i think i know of is private (ie on somebody's personal land), so you might check with parks and rec in joco to find out if there are any public courses.

disc golf is also a medal event in the state games of north carolina.

also try the PDGA website, http://www.pdga.org/ yes Professional Disc Golfers Association, and yes, there are people who do it for a living! i actually know someone who was on tour as a pro for about 5 years...

re: the discs themselves. rule #1: don't call them frisbees! they're not for catching, and will seriously hurt your hand if you try. they are all different weights, shapes, consistencies (firmness of the plastic), etc. having a bag of discs is much like having a golf bag. there are long range, turns left, turns right, mid range, putters, etc....

check out innova's site here: http://www.innovadiscs.com/

There's one at the Community Park in Smithfield, off Booker Dairy Road next to Smithfield-Selma Senior High. Tends to be a little overgrown in the summer.

    Frisbee golf?

Maybe Ultimate Frisbee, Ken. We used to play it in college. Let me tell ya, you'd better be in shape to play. You're always on the run and hardly ever sit out during a game!
