Any ideas why my desktop would be humming? Doesn't happen all the time and when I give it a "tap" it will stop.....
Likely to be one of your fans...in particular the one in the power supply. The vibration can cause parts of your case to "hum". Might want to take the cover off and re-seat it firmly, which can solve that. And while the cover is off, it's a good time to do some preventive maintenance and blow out the dust from the components you are likely to find there.
LOL funny!!! One of my towers does this too. Drives me and DH crazy. Guess I need to jump in there and look at the fan.
Either a cooling fan or the power supply fan.If you tap it and it stops then I would say just cooling fan that prolly needs to be reseated.
You may just have some dust or hair in one of the fans that is causing it to work harder than it should. Get some canned air.
About 90 percent of the time, that noise comes from ball bearings inside a cooling fan which are wearing out. If it's the fan inside the power supply, that's a bad thing, because once the fan fails, the PSU will usually burn out not long afterwards.
