I am in the market for an external hard drive for keeping family pictures, school work and to use as a means to make DVD's out of our home movies. Mainly back up in case our laptop is lost. I would like to get one with USB and Firewire. Does anyone have any suggestions on what brand? I am thinking between 320 - 500 gigs external hard drive.

I would recommended a Seagate product. You should be able to get one large enough for what you need for under $100. I got a good deal on one from staples a few weeks ago. I would NOT recommended anything from Maxtor as I have had two of those go bad. Maxtor has recently been bought out by Seagate which is a good thing.

Thanks for your help. I wasn't looking for portability. I just want a dependable back up to use at home. The laptop that I use has 100 gig drive and I use flash drives also, I don't really have a need for a portable hard drive. I will look more closely at the seagate and western digital drives now that I know to rule out Maxtor.

We used a couple of those Seagate external drives to store user data while we migrated a site to our network last month. They were great, no software to install just plug and go.
