    Hello!

I am new to the area and looking for a retail position. Can anyone tell me about the malls around here? Since I am not from here - I don't know which mall is "better". Are any of them in a bad area? I am looking at Streets at Southpoint and Crabtree. Are there any other large malls?

    Any input would be appreciated!

    Thanks!

There is the one in Cary Towne Center in Cary and also Triangle town center off of Capital Blvd in Raleigh. Triangle is the newest one. BUT if you like retail and you're in the 4042 area you may want to try the Smithfield outlets...

I like either Triangle Towne Center or Southpoint. Crabtree and Cary Towne Center have seen better days, just my opinion.

I live in Clayton, work about an exit or two away from the Streets of Southpoint. It is in Durham so you are looking at about a 45 minute to one hour drive, both ways.

Triangle Town Center is in Raleigh, the might be the closet. You can check with the service desk on the second floor in the middle to see if they have a job book available. Crabtree Valley is a bit further into Raleigh, but again, check out the service desk.

I know some of the main department stores are looking for temp seasonal jobs, but you want to apply ASAP, they want all of their training complete by Black Friday. :)

    Good luck!

I wouldn't want to have to drive to Durham unless I had to and with three major malls in Raleigh/Cary and also North Hills on Six Forks Road...plus countless shopping centers...I don't see where it should be that hard to find retail work in Wake County. In Johnston, as already mentioned, you've got the Smithfield outlet center beside I-95. Perhaps the mall that offers the most long-term potential is Triangle Town Center, which is located beside the Northern Wake Expressway. It will eventually connect to I-40 near 40/42 and then reconnect with I-40 at RDU airport. Right now, it is designated as I-540 but will be changed to I-640 when it reaches 40/42.

Personally, from a shopper's point of view, I don't care for Triangle mall. I still prefer the 'standard', which is Crabtree Valley Mall. It has the most diversity in retail shopping. A lot of what is at Triangle are little boutiques that either do not interest me or is too expensive for my tastes.

Depends on the stores you want also... Example Cary has JC Penny's while the others do not.... Triangle has Sacks Fifth Avenue and several other of the big stores also. I think Triangle has the most variety.... I just do not prefer it over the rest (personally).... I like Cary and then Crabtree!
Crabtree has a GREAT Belks.... Coach store, build a bear, disney and so on! LOL!!

You know, mentioning JCPenney...the store at North Hills (Six Forks Rd.) was said to have had the opportunity to move in as an anchor store at Triangle Town Center but turned it down. I read somewhere that its women's dress sales were at one time ranked sixth in the eastern U.S. or something like that. They felt as though their business would do better at North Hills and that's where they stayed.

Another prominent shopping center in Raleigh is Cameron Village. I think its the oldest shopping center in Wake County.

    Yep! You are correct! :)
I used to work at JcPenney, and I remember we had a meeting once where there was a discussion taking place about a new mall opening up on Capital Blvd. We all thought that was...weird. lol Then they talked about moving the store there too, but it wouldnt take place in 10 years. :)
    ha ha

Anyway, JcP just remodeled their current store and stayed. North hills was planned on being an office building with condo's below (or vice versa) but they changed their mind.

    I'm glad they did too!

    retail jobs at the mall

i have worked at crabtree and north hills before renovation. my opinion is the parking for employees . you must think about your safety when you work retail. crabtree makes you park on level two of deck. when i worked there. not very safe after closing time kind of scary. north hills has no parking either and employers dont want you parking in prime spots. i would recommend cary mall or triangle . for your safety. no decks and your in plain view when you leave . the restraunts are there so its not totally isolated. durham has already had a drive by shooting at southpoint.

I'm not questioning your own judgement about Crabtree since I've never worked there, but I would think that Crabtree would be safer since the parking is stacked rather than outward into a parking lot away from the mall. Also, doesn't Crabtree have one of the larger security forces of the local malls and more surveillance equipment?

Of course, I know that the upper levels of the parking deck are kind of desolate. Looks like at closing time, they would shift some of the security up there for the mall employees.
