Received a catalog with one of these in it saying you can hook up your computer to it, put an album or 45 on the turntable and be able to transfer the music from the album to the computer, which can then be transferred to an iPod. Anyone know anything about these? Grace
These were hot ticket items last Christmas. I researched them then and found them to have too many kinks still needing ironed out. Went with the straight up turntable instead.
got one I actually got one for Christmas 2 years ago.Its great-but I only had a certain number of albums-and once I transferred them all to cd and/or Ipod-I dont use it anymore!
Craig, I received a Herrington catalog today always review it before disposal. On page 43 is the Transferring Turntable, Plays Irreplaceable LPs and 45s Right into Your Computer -- So You Can Burn Them to DC or Upload Memories to Your iPod. It states that you can use it as a turntable or hook it up to the USB port on your computer and archive your favotire LPs or 45s into digital files. Includes Software Suite for ripping and editing, USB 2.0 Enabled, PC or Mac, 33 1/3, 45 and 78 RPMs. I am just a little skeptical since I have not heard of this. Thought someone on our Forum might know about them. Grace P.S. $149.95
With the right software program, all you need are a few audio cables (if your turntable supports it) that convert to the cables your pc needs and the software does the rest while you play the record. People do it all the time. I have a few thousand mp3 files that were ripped from vinyl.
Wife bought one, and it works great. I personally have not tried it. To convert all my Vinyl to MP3 I would be transferring 24 hours a for a month and I am sure I haven't the storage space. So this project will have to wait till retirement, but I will probably be deaf by then so it won't matter. :x
Easiest way (cheaper too), is if you've already got your deck hooked up to your stereo system all you need is a RCA to 1/8" stereo jack cable. Make sure you get a shielded one. Computer power supplies can cause some nasty line noise. Anyways... Plug the RCA side into your tape line out on your stereo head unit and the 1/8" side into your sound card's line in. If you've got a fairly new stereo, it probably won't have a phono-in so you'll need a Phono Preamp which you can pick up for around $25 - $30. As for recording software, there's a huge variety of possible packages to use to choose from. A cheap and looks like it works pretty well is Acoustica's Spin It Again (http://acoustica.com/spinitagain/). I haven't used it personally, but there's a free demo that you can d/l and try out. I'd recommend Sony's Sound Forge Audio Studio (http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/products/product.asp?pid=454). There's some free stuff too that might be worth checking into. After you get all of this you should be good to go. One thing to remember is to be moderate on your output (volume) on your stereo and control the gain on your recording software. Also, be sure to pick up some new needles before you start.
Thanks so much, everyone. I will look at my stereos/turntables today or tomorrow and will Post what I have to see if you guys can suggest the exact items I will need to be able to transfer my albums. I, too, will not be able to transfer all of them for a while but some would be wonderful. How exciting. Grace
I always want to save money. I have yet to check my turntables but the one in my bedroom is way old and is way up high because everything is stackable. Remember those? The one in the living room is newer, as in the last 20 years, and is smaller. I will Post what they both are and what computer I use to see if you guys can help. Learn something new all the time. Thanks, Grace
Okay. Everytime someone says RCA to me I register the brand model but I don't think that is what you are talking about. That's why I keep saying I need to let you know what type of stereos I have. I am correct, right? You mean something different than my brain is processing. I will probably have to be walked through some of this once I get to a certain point, if you guys will help. I don't know where my computer's soundcard's line in port is but I am sure I can find a diagram on the internet. Thanks. I may try to do this, this weekend. Grace
Oh Ken, thanks so much for doing that for me. I will print it out and take it with me. You know how technically challenged I am. Grace
Thanks. I will see if I can find some needles just in case and I already have the cloth to clean the albums. Will try tomorrow or Sunday. Grace
