Ok, I admit that I'm computer illiterate sooo here's my ?

We are going on vacation next month and the resort where we are staying has wireless internet in every room. How can I find out if my laptop will work on a wireless connection? Do I have to buy something special for it to work?

Pardon my ignorance on this subject :?

no it'll work....your laptop will pick up the wireless signal...and it'll prompt you what to do, the wireless signal will show up in the tray at the bottom on the right....

So all I need to take with me is the laptop and the power cord and when I plug it in and turn it on it will automatically connect and tell me what to do?

Short answer "No", most modern ones do, but not all.

If you see a little WIFI logo indicator light you are probably OK.Better yet, hit the "Start" button, choose "Connect To" then "Show all Connections" and see if "Wireless Network Connection" should show up. If not most hotels that offer wireless will have cards that you can insert into your laptop.

Passed it off to the household Geek and she says that she doubts that you have wireless.

Most, if not all, hotels have a wireless bridge you can use. I would check with them before buying one since you don't typically need wireless

why dont you take it somewhere local that has the wifi/wireless spot offered and see what you get.....

I know Cleveland cake and coffee is one place in the 40/42 area that has wireless, I am not sure about others in the area....

Thanks for the idea Kell Bell. Hatteras has got me all hooked up!

Vacation will be a lot better now that DD can get on the computer at night and talk to her friends.

Post your laptop make & model number on here and then we can tell you yes or no on wireless capabilities of the unit

Also, If it's less than 3 or 4 years old it will have an ethernet port on the side or back. You can always "plug" into the hotel connection. Ethernet cords are cheap or you can borrow the one from your house connection while your gone. Most hotels have wireless and hard wire connections in the rooms. Call the hotel and ask.
