Has anyone been to the Planetarium in Chapel Hill? I would like to know if it's worth it or not to go. Trying to find something to do this weekend for the whole family. Any suggestions?
wow, its been atleast 15+ years since i went. i remember going in elemetary school and it was cool edit: im 31 now
I went with my son on a field trip this year and was a bit underwhelmed. The shows were okay but there is not much else to do. I don't know how it would be going without the school.
I went a few weeks ago. They have their show schedules on their website. The shows are around 20 minutes long. The also have the Ancient Carolinians exhibit now. It's pretty small and you can see if all in about 15 - 30 minutes. If your kids are small they'll probably be bored. If pre-teen or teen, they'll probably be a little more interested. Either way it's not an "exciting" day trip but you can always walk to Starbucks from there for some good coffee!
Its part of UNC isn't it? I have wanted to go for a few years now. I use to go to the Planetarium in NYC as a child. How does Moorehead compare to the one in the Museum of Natural History in NYC?
I also went on a field trip with my oldest son's class and was disappointed. In my opinion, not worth wasting the gas for.
http://www.moreheadplanetarium.org/index.cfm Looked at the schedule and some of it seems interesting. Kids are 10 and 12. I just want something exciting to do. Already went and got all my hair chopped off today. Now need to find something more exciting to do! LOL
We went a year or so ago. I had a nice time. We saw one of the Magic Treehouse shows, walked around the building - we were there maybe two hours. They also had another education show that went on in another room and we checked that out as well. It wasn't on planets or stars more of a National Geographic IIRC. For the drive, it is a long enough fieldtrip. If you take your time and enjoy the history of the building, grab some lunch, head home - a day well spent.
I enjoyed it too. KIds loved it. They have the coolest gift shop too. I chaperoned field trips twice there, and loved it. I think its a great way to relax and do a family thing. Lots of good places to eat. Make sure you wear your NC State paraphernalia, or at least wear red. :jester:
There are two other planetariums around, but none probably any closer. There's one in downtown Rocky Mount and the other in Kinston.
<sigh> Guess we aren't doing anything this weekend now. DH ended up in the hospital again last night. Maybe another weekend we can take the boys to check out the planetarium. I didn't know there was one in Kinston. Is it any good?
There's a nice nature center in Kinston, too, or there was several years ago. I haven't been in a while. I know they were mostly wiped out in the flood, but they had made good progress at rebuilding the last time I was there.
