They typically deal with new subdivisions first, and would start the rezoning cases around 6:30.

Smithfield — The Johnston County Planning Board has backed a request to build a commercial shopping center in the Cleveland community.
Carolyn Martin, of Commercial Properties Development Corp., in Baton Rouge, La., presented the plans to the Planning Board last week. The Cornwallis Commons shopping center would sit on 13 acres at the intersection of N.C. 42 West and Cornwallis Road.
“I think this property will be more a neighborhood service center, which means it may have dentists, doctors, a daycare center, a bank and maybe a drugstore,” Martin said. “We haven’t ruled out grocers, but we have been talking to them for three years and everyone says they want to wait and see what Wal-Mart does.”
The request came before the board last month but was put on hold after residents of Austin Pond expressed concerns about the shopping center.
“We realize that the proposed commercial center is a multimillion-dollar project, but we wish to remind everyone that collectively, the residents of Austin Pond also represent a multimillion-dollar investment as homeowners,” the neighbors wrote in a letter to the board on April 15. “Our interests lie, of course, in ensuring the safety and welfare of our children, our neighbors and also the future residents of Austin Pond.”
Martin met with the Austin Pond residents to find solutions for their concerns. Martin agreed to limit the hours for trash pickup, install heating and air-conditioning units on the roof to minimize noise and build a barrier fence between the subdivision and shopping center. Also, Martin said fast-food restaurants would not be allowed on the outparcels.
One driveway will be allowed on N.C. 42 and two on Cornwallis Road. The southernmost driveway on Cornwallis Road will be a right-in only. Residents also want the developers to install a walkway from the neighborhood to the shopping center. The request will go before the County Commissioners in July.

Thanks for the update, I have been wondering what came of their meeting. I hope the residents got all the conscessions they wanted. From the sound of it there will be no Harris Teeter, etc. Have to mark the calendar for July.

There was never a rumor of a HT going in at that location. The rumor is of HT going in near where the new hospital is going in (have ya'll noticed the bulldozers out there?) at 42/amelia church.

We had heard that a Harris Teeter was coming to Flowers Plantation across from the Food Lion, on the same side of the road as the dentist office and fish market. That would really be nice if it develops.

Saw them and the sign for the Johnston Memorial Medical Center. We are going to be squeezed from both ends with Walmart coming along at the same time and the bypass opening.
I hope the rumor you heard comes to pass, a Harris Teeter down near Clayton makes more sense then one at Cornwallis and 42. Did you hear that there would be movie theaters?

OK since everyone is asking have they heard this or that, I got one for you all! I heard through the gravevine that there may be a Target going up behind Shooters? Anyone else hear that crazy one??? Of course I am wishful thinking that it would be so cool to have one right here in my own backyard, but in reality it will be a zoo with WalMart across the way! OMG People! What to do. . .

There is no Target going in behind Shooters. That will be an apartment development there.

Thanks Grinder! I did read on here about the apartment complex, but heard something different in the last week. I was only excited for a brief second!
