I have a type of palm in my house that is about 5 1/2 feet tall. It has always been really healthy, but this morning I noticed it is covered with some kind of webs and some of the leaves are not looking well. From looking on the internet, it seems I probably have spider mites, but I cannot find anything about how to get rid of them. Anyone had any experience with this or know where to steer me for a solution? Thanks!
Sometimes I've found that once they are on there, the plant may be doomed  You can use a mild dish detergent and water solution (Dawn works well- is very mild) and gently clean all the leaves. You might need to also change the soil.
Spider Mites Keep searching online. I know I had the same thing happen to a palm once but that was 20 years ago so I don't remember what I used but there was something that I sprayed on the mites to kill them.
Try Safer's Insecticidal Soap. You can get it at Lowe's HI, a hardware store, or the garden department of a big box store First, wash the webs & stuff off the plant, if you haven't already. When the plant is dry, spray Safer's on all leaf surfaces, especially underneath. You may have to repeat every 7-10 days for a while, until you see no more signs of the spider mites.
I would take it outside and wash it down with water first, then use the Safer after it is dry. Do it out of the direct sun if possible.
Thank you so much for the advice!! I did take it outside yesterday and washed the webs off with the hose. I'll go get the Safer's today and spray that on. I sure hope it's not too late because a lot of the leaves are turning brown. But it is definitely worth a try to save it. Thanks again!
if you can't get safer soap, use dish washing detergent. The soap smothers the mites. A tablespoon of epsom salt in a gallon of water will also help. They like Mg
I agree with the soap postings. Just use a regular spray bottle with a little of the solution and water then spray. In no time, with proper maintenance, hopefully all will be fine. Sherry
Speaking of plants, what were those hostas you said i needed Tassy and where can i find them, also i need to get some more elephant plants for the side of the house, any suggestions of the best place to get them?
i dont remember... But, look at the ones in my yard when you come over on Saturday... and I can tell you where you can find any of those that you might like. We can give you a few elephant ears too.
Thanks for the help. I'll try the soap if I can't find the Safer's. Kaci - I bought some hostas at Lowes HI not too long ago. They may still have some. I also saw them at Home Depot last year. They may have them again this year.
My suggestion would be to take it outside, buy some the Ortho Seven dust that you can hook to the end of your hose and hose it down. Leave it outside for a few days and hose it down really good when you get home at night. That should take care of any current and future bugs. Craig
You called them mini or baby or some small name hosta to go around the outside edge of my little hosta garden, and OMG, yes, if you have any elephant ears to spare i would love them:hurray:
