So....Does anyone else besides me think it might be a good idea/good public service to arrange a 4042 motorcycle rally to raise the awareness of the presence of 2 wheeled vehicles? Here is "my" thought.... We all meet up somewhere in the 4042 intersection area...Have a group ride down 42 to downtown clayton. then back towards garner via main st., then jump back on 70 towards smithfield and then back to the original rally spot. My whole vision is to increase the general publics awareness of the # of 2 wheeled vehicles on our roads. There has got to be SOMETHING we can do as a group to make this happen...and to make us safer (bikers that is). thoughts? opinions? or am I just smoking crack? Discuss opcorn:
I'm fully aware of the presense of 2 wheeled vehicles. Do you mean the crotch rocket doing 100MPH in the fast lane on the 540 loop? Or do you mean the one that cuts in between the car lanes doing 40mph when traffic is stopped on 40 near RTP? Or the ones that have mufflers that exceed the noise decible laws and just can't resist reving the throttle at stop lights? Please tell me what good that does other than waste gas? Or do you mean the one that passes on the right side because his bike fits so nicely in that short space? Or the one that was doing well over 80MPH on the high ramp from 264 to the 440; had the thing banked so low his knee was and inch from the road. Or the worst one I saw. A woman was merging into the left turn lane when a crotch rocket passed her in the median on the left side while she was making the lane change. Whe she caught vision of that bike inches from her car she jerked the wheel to the right and hit the car in that lane. Of course the bike never stopped. My day job requires about 5 hours per day of driving in the Raleigh / Durham area. I've seen all of those instances in just the past week. I'm going to install rapid door openers so those guys are aware of 4 wheeled vehicles. You need a rally to clean up the ranks and get rid of the idiots giving you a bad name.
I have to agree with you, I am aware these people have little to no protection (not sure how that is my fault) so I try to be extra aware of them. But I see a significant portion (10% to 25%) that seem to have a death wish and think they own the road.
Holy ***** not what I was expecting. Here I am trying to get a crowd together for the safety for everyone and I get slammed by someone who obviously hates motorcyclist. Not all riders are *ssholes and not all riders break the laws. yes, there are idiots out there...But tell me you haven't had some punk *** in a CAR do that same stuff you mentioned...If not, you must be blind b/c I see 'em everyday! hell, I drive a full size pickup and had some idiot in a riced out civic literally run me off the road...But I guess that kinda driving is ok since he was in a car, huh? Don't classify all motorcyclists as idiots or aggressive drivers...that just shows ignorance.
Let me know when and I'll bring at LEAST 30 bikers! We left out Saturday am, turned right out of our subdivision and then left onto Kelly Rd - a lady in a silver minivan pulled right out in front of us. DH had to lock up the brakes nearly sending me flying over his head and the bars, of course, he got his composure (or adrenaline) and got beside her and luckily she had her window down so I could give her a piece of my mind. I mean seriously, if WE WERENT PAYING ATTENTION, WE'D PROBABLY WOULD BE IN THE HOSPITAL RIGHT NOW OR WORSE.
I guess if we are the kind of cycle riders that "behave" then we are invisible. I agree that many people drive in an unsafe manner, whether on 2 wheels or 4. As a rider, I try to maintain vigilance, because I know too many people just don't "see" a bike coming towards them. KK, I find one part of your post extremely irritating. You used the term "riced" up Honda. Makes me think you're one of those HG riders who think his fecal material is odorless. Fact is, if you want bike riders to join you to make your point, you had best lose the attitude that if it's a "metric" bike that it doesn't count. Obviously, if no appliance you own is Japanese (I'm betting your cell phone, TV, digital camera, microwave and a lot of other things you have are made offshore. Of course, I could be wrong and it's an invitation just for bikes made in Milwaukee. If so, I hope you have a good turnout. The metric riders I know will be riding elsewhere. Last time I looked at a charity drive, there was a mixture of bikes. What counted was that you rode, not what you rode.
to clarify, I have nothing against imports. The term "riced out" has several meanings...the one I refer to is with the loud obnoxious exhaust and crappy driving (read idiot). don't jump to conclusions... as far as what I drive...Its a Suzuki. Again, don't jump to conclusions...It could be a riced out dodge, ford, chevy, whatever...its an expression.... everyone else: Stop hijacking...If you have a problem with what I post...take it to a PM please and thx.
Absotivly Yes, I am a rider also, I have seen some of the Idiots out there. Mostly are you teen to mid twenty's. After they have had their so called accident . They will stop this behavior. I call them Glory and Gory riders. I would love to take that ride around town. But small problem my put is on the fritz and I can't seem to get it fixed right. I have a carb problem that has exausted all my funds and now I am stuck staring at a realy awsome looking non riding bike. I used to belong to the Virago ownes club in Florida, and we always helped with each others bikes,Charity ,Poker, Toys for tots, and ect runs. The club is now defunked due to that most members have moved away or just passed away from oldness. If any one can help with my delema I would be greatfull. and most certainly return the favor. That what real Bikers do. We are not a bunch of misfits and Houligans. We actualy care about what is going on in our neighbor hoods.
KK, I also like your idea. I also know where ddrdan (cut him alittle slack ddrdan) is coming. I would be interested in a ride. Anything to raise good awareness. I would like to know more. There are few other riders on here as well. Maybe you will here from them.
Ok ladies and gents...After the response I have gotten, I think we can make this happen. So, here is what I plan to do. Monday 16JUN2008: Call Clayton, Garner, and Smithfield PD's and make sure this is ok with them and see if we can get support from them. If so, then I will try my best to make the date far out enough for those that have to plan. Someone (via PM) mentioned to me to get the paper involved and basically have them "advertise" the event for us to possibly increase the attendance. Not sure about this one, but we'll see. Based on you guys/gals so far, I think this is going to be a good thing and hopefully make a difference...Even if it only saves 1 life...It will be well worth it. Harleygirl: 30 peeps eh? Can you confirm that so I can let the LEO's know that we do have a large group? That'd be great...And please everyone else...Spread the word via your workplace, neighborhood, etc... thank you everyone for your support! KK
kk, you might want to consider some of the restaurants in the 40/42 area that have big parking area and normally slow sat. lunch to mid-afternnon crowd. Clayton has Beemers so should get some cooperation. Crossing county lines to Garner should not be a problem but probably will be. Approaching as a safety/awareness project will get a better reception from law enforcement. You will find a poser majority here vs. Alaska.
No, your post above shows ignorance. On one post you tell Kodiak, "don't jump to conclusions." and in the post above you jumped to a conclusion. My last sentence explained who the problem was and who needed to fix it. I was riding a motorcycle before you were a dream in someones eyes. I rode for 20 years. Rode em all, from rice burners, Nortons, Triumphs, to a sweet 1969 XLCH chopper. I don't hate motorcyclists. I do hate bikes without a chain though. It just ain't a bike if it doesn't have a chain:lol: Motorcyles are the minority on the road. Because of this you have to be twice as cautious to avoid becoming a statistic. In my days, we took care of the crotch rocket jockey's that gave us a bad name. You need 2 good legs to ride. What you have now are thousands of 'new' riders because of high gas prices. It's your sport, and your job to keep them in line, if you want driver awareness. Let that percentage grow and that's all the 4 wheelers are going to see and remember.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rice_burner "As an adjective, rice alone is primarily used and can apply to both vehicle and driver. Alternates include riced, riced out, riced up, and ricey. Ricing, a term usually not used by the modifier him/herself, is the present progressive of modifying a car in the described manner. However, this term is completely relative to a person's opinion about what "rice" is. What one thinks is ricey, another may not. There is no concrete way to decide who's opinion is correct. With that said, the following is a generalized term referring to how it is commonly used by many people today." On another note, I think it's nice that a new poster has come forward to get involvd in the community - just don't try to dictate what is posted in THIS community and you will be alright (re: stop hijacking, take it to PMs). That just irks me, but perhaps I am being hypocritical here.
And sadly, the majority of riders that I see are flying down the rd, weaving in and out of traffic - one guy even had flipflops on. I always get away from them, they make me a nervous wreck.
Wasn't meant to be "dictating"...Just trying to a keep a thread on track. You know, keep it clean... and yes, the flip-flop guys are idiots, as well as others...
Thank you for the tip...I was thinking about the lowes food at the corner of 50/42. Not sure exactly how many people total would like to be involved. I also need to talk to them to make sure they are ok with it. I am also up for suggestions. Like I previously stated...If this ride even helps save 1 life/accident...It is worth it to me.
You are still new, so I will school you..... Threads do not typically stay on track at 4042. It's just the nature of this board. There will be multiple conversations going on within one thread. Just scroll.
I always think it's interesting to start a thread and see how far off on a tangent folks go. It's a study in the human mind.........or an online version of "telephone". Sorry! Didn't mean to hijack!! I will tell DH about it, he rides, but not typically with a large group as he thinks it's dangerous to be out with more than a couple other riders at a time. The whole rubber band effect and all. 8)
UPDATE: Ok, so far this morning I went down to the Clayton PD and most likely have their support as well as their 2 motorcycles to be riding with us. garner PD will most likely have their motorcycle officer ride with us as well. Just trying to reach the state police now and the sheriffs office. Here are the details. when: July 19th meeting place/start: Lowes foods on highway 50/42 (tentative) time meet at 3:30pm, roll out at 4pm. the route: head down 42 towards clayon, get greeted by the clayton PD, ride through clayton VIA hwy 70 and then through garner. Take 401 back towards wake tech, and then hwy 1010 to hwy 50, and back to the original starting point. This is all tentative...but so far, the PD's are in support of it.
