I know that I will probably get slammed for this, but I have been dying to ask. Why are people raising $ for a county funded facility, that we already pay taxes to support? If they are in need, is our tax money being spent appropriately? I have also heard that a county run facility is not non-profit, and therefore cannot take donations (legally), as it is against IRS regulations. Would it not be better to spend hours socializing animals and bathing etc... rather than give them money, that we all ready are paying in taxes? I am all for helping animals, but I just feel that as a tax funded facility there should not be a need for financial assistance. Just a thought...slam away.
The Johnston County Animal Shelter is part of the local government. Certain parts of local governments have non-profit entities in which they are allowed to raise funds which is called "Friends". Basically, libraries, museums, etc all have "Friends" which are non-profit entities that they use to raise funds. Thank you for supporting the FRIENDS OF THE JOHNSTON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER located in Smithfield.
Unfortunately, the animal shelters are not high on the list when it comes to distributing funds from the government. Things like healthcare and education are higher on the list and get more money. With the numbers of animals that go in and out of shelters, they could always use a little extra help whether it be money or time donated.

I wouldn't think of slamming you for asking that question! It's perfectly reasonable to wonder why you need to donate to an org. that already gets public funding. I wonder that every time I have to send a box of Kleenex to my kids' schools. Anyway, one answer is that the director of the shelter wants to build a facility which will be used in a sray / neuter program for the county. The county doesn't have the funding for this, so most of funding, if not all, must come from private donations. I am not familiar with Friends of the J.C.A.S. but I imagine that the money they raise will be used for programs such as this one, and maybe to by extra Kleenex for the workers for every time they have to put an animal down.
Payments may be dropped off at the Bulldog Express located next to Food Lion on Glen Road at 40/42. Box # 322.
Profit is not persay $$$ earned off the sales. You have to account for a variety of factors such as items I have donated through my own purchases, my out of pocket costs for supplies such as catalogs, stamps, mailings, GAS, time, etc. Basically, my answer is that no, I probably will not make any profit off this fundraiser because I am having a fundraiser to raise profits for the Friends of the Johnston County Animal Shelter, not myself.
