I was just out walking my dog. What should have been a really enjoyable experience turned into a huge headache. As we came by a house I heard someone calling, "Fido Don't you Dare!" I turned around and saw a HUGE boxer barreling toward us. My dog is no lightweight (I have a male German Shepherd), but he does not like it when other dogs or anything else come up on him from behind. To be honest, neither do I. I figured if this dog planned to act foolish we'd be better off facing him until his owner caught up. At first everything was fine, but then the other dog absolutely freaked out. He kept trying to jump on top of my dog and dominate him. My dog, thankfully, was as patient as he could be. He tried to just sit by me, but this other dog kept racing around us and coming at us from different angles. When the other dog got between me and my dog, my dog snapped at him. I corrected him immediately, and he didn't do it again. The other owner was just saying things like, "Fido say hello nicely" and "Maybe if he gets bitten he'll learn a lesson" and "You're not used to meeting new neighborhood dogs are you Fido." It took probably 10 minutes for him to catch his dog and hold him for long enough for us to walk away quickly. Does anyone else have people like this in their neighborhood? And do you have any suggestions? This walking route is a mile in length and it's perfect for us minus the guy who doesn't know how to be a responsible pet owner. What would you do in a situation like this? I don't want to put myself in a dangerous situation again (or my dog for that matter). I don't want to have to carry a taser or dog repellent on my walks. Any suggestions?
Yesterday on our walk I had to grab up my 30 pound Beagle when an unrestrained Doberman came after us. The Dobie did not bite, but the Beagle clawed the hell out of my face and neck in panic. :x
Saw a lady one day being drug around by her Boxer...on the leash. If you can't control your dog, you certainly don't have any business with one.
I'd remind the dog's owner in a nice way that there are leash laws which prohibit unrestrained animals from running the streets and tell them that you would hate to use something like a tazer on a dog, but if you encounter any other loose dogs, the next dog might not be so lucky. IF you are out walking and your dog ever does get into a squabble and no one is there to pull off the other dog - let go of the leash and let your dog defend himself - with you holding on, he can't do what he needs to do and you could end up hurt being in the middle. In the meantime, carry an umbrella - unopened - sometimes just seeing something long in someones hand will ward off a dog from approaching. If you see one running towards you - face them - stomp your foot and yell - sound really mad "NO!" "Go Home" If you sound ticked enough, it might back them off as well.
We have a dog that roams the neighborhood and is sometimes dumb enough to come into our yard. Our dogs are on an electric fence so they can't leave the yard and they raise some hell even when he approaches. Long story short we are not really sympathetic if one of our dogs attacks it when it roams into our yard. I'm thinking we need to leave a note in the person's mailbox just asking nicely to keep the dog in their yard. It might not be a bad idea to do the same for this person. You should be able to walk in peace (you and your dog baby). And I do agree with the previous poster to just let him rip into the other dog and not try to pull them off lest you get hurt yourself. And if the nice note doesn't work I'm sure a threat to call the authorities might.
Do you have a paintball gun? Possible and airesoft or BB gun? I know that seems mean. But my dog is more important to me than someone else's. But if you think your dog can kick it's butt. Let it. I love German Shepards. And if I know your dog it would have loved to protect you.
I've tried this many times and surprisingly it does work. In a firm voice I said things like "go home", "go on", ... and they did. However, if I see the owner I do remind him/her there is a leash law. If the person acts like a jerk, I tell them the next time the dog comes after us I will be calling animal control. I follow through. One dog nearly knocked my daughter off her bike as it chased her nipping at her feet while the owner did nothing. This was after the dog had chased us several other days. I haven't seen the dog loose since animal control paid the owner a visit. Unfortunately some people have no respect for others and it takes getting authories involved to protect yourself, your family and your dog.
Let it bite you and retire early. Thats my plan if anyones stray dog bites me. Hopefully they won't be to settled in their house because I'll be the new owner. I spent lots of $$ to fence in my yard to keep my dogs from wondering around.
:iagree: Rabies, tissue/muscle/nerve damage and possibility of scared for life, not to mention the pain involved and you won't get enough money for pain and suffering to retire or own his house. Definitely not a bright idea.
