Okay, so in my mailbox today was a "toys" catalog from Target. I flipped through and saw where they have a "Nintendo Wii Game System" which includes "Wii remote, Nunchuck controller and Wii Sports game" advertised for $249.99.

I was surprised and a little excited to see this because there are ZERO PS3 games suitable for a 7 year old little girl out there, and sometimes she likes to play video games too. So I get on target.com and look for their Wii game systems. Under their regular website it comes up as unavailable. So I go to their weekly ads and look there. Here is the link to the ad. If you put your mouse on the pic of the Wii system, you'll see that it comes up as $249.99. BUT, if you "click to view additional information" and then click "Wii system" you get a "We're Sorry! No additional information is currently available for the Weekly Ad item you've requested. Please try again later" message. All the Wii accessories show additional information, such as the where they can be purchased. :banghead:

We would put the Wii in our living room so the whole family can bowl, etc. I was actually a little excited about having one and was going to give it to the whole family (not just my dd) but I'm not going to go crazy trying to find one this year, or pay a ridiculous price for one. Wii has been around for what, at least 3 years now? Not being able to find one for Christmas every year is getting very, very old.

I recently purchased a Wii at the GameStop in Cary with no problems. $249.99. They had 25 in stock.

I'm planning on buying 2 DS's for Xmas, hopefully this weekend. Anybody think it'll be hard to find, or is it pretty easy? Does anyone know if you can still use old Gameboy games in them? My mom has an older one, with some old Gameboy games that she said I can have if they're still transferrable (that's not the word I wanted, but it works)

yes you can use old Gameboy games and the DS's are easy to find at any of the places I listed in my last post. and they are the same price no matter where you go.

Thanks Kellbell! Yes, I GOOGLED (I know you're big on that!!) them the other day at 4 area stores, and they were the same price everywhere. I just hadn't actually looked in them to see if they physically had them, but was hoping they did. It's gonna be a tight Xmas, but we do want to get the boys their DS's, they're getting at those ages where they want that stuff. We don't have any video games at all, except the Wii, but that's a family game, and we only play that about twice a month maybe, only on the weekend, and the DS will be the same way, or when we're on long trips, things like that. I have a hard time spending $30-50 on games, seems ridiculous to me! Can you get good deals at the used game stores like Game Stop? (is that what it's called?) And are they in good condition/warrantied?

yes, you can get good deals on used games for the DS's at Game Stop and Play n Trade. They all have a warranty too. My kids have been playing and trading since they were 5....we stay in there. I also tell relatives to give them gift cards for those places (instead of trying to pin point an exact game for others to buy).

I purchased one for my son last Christmas, his Godmother purchased one the year before and neither of them lasted a year. The hinge on both broke at the same spot, I will not be purchasing another. You can still use the Gameboy games in them .

my two boys, who are now 12....got their first gameboy, at age 5, they got a DS two years ago.....they still have and play with the gameboy, few scrapes, and their DS's dont even have a scratch on them. They have traveled all over the US and back...never had one problem whatsoever.

good to know. mine will be 5 & 9, the younger one would be obsessed with video games if we let him, which is one reason why we don't have them in the house! but we travel alot, and would like to have something they can play with while in the car, and they're getting to the age where they can start being responsible for their own things...they've both also been really good in school this year, and grades are great, so think they've earned it.

No you cannot use gameboy games in a nintendo DS. You can use the little gameboy ADVANCE games in it, but not the ones for the original gameboy,or the gameboy color.

I've got both the Nintendo DS and the PSP. Lemme tell you what, I'd be lost without my PSP. I use it for work, play, everything. If you see me, I've got it with me. Absolutely the greatest gadget ever created (I've had them all from Atari up to PS2). I rarely ever use my computer anymore, cause I can do it all on my PSP (surf the net, internet radio, keep my phone numbers, etc). Dunno about bluetooth on it, never tried, but I dont think they are unless the newest model has it.

The DS is neat for a kids toy (to play games, etc), but the PSP is a full fledged multimedia platform. I suggest the PSP over the DS by far.

DS hinge breakage is common. They are relatively in-expensive to fix tho. The PSP screen is easy to break if you hit it just right. Dropped mine from a few feet and it busted once, but have dropped it several times since then with no problems (get the best case you can afford).

I've heard if you research "custom firmware", you can learn about all sorts of crazy stuff you can do with the PSP like play all the original Nintendo games, Download illegal games and movies for free, etc. I think several people advertising on Craigslist can do it for you for cheap, or find a geeky person if you are into that illegal stuff.

Thanks Daredevil, but this actually will be used as a kids toy (see above post) and nothing more. And they won't be using it much either. They've played with both the PSP and DS's of friends, and they LOVE the DS more for some reason. I have not used/played with either, so I'm just going by what I know. I also want something I know they're capable of playing, and has age appropriate games, and I know there are a lot of games my 5 yo can play on the DS because he played at the sitter's all summer long! The PSP, from what I've heard (and again, haven't used one myself) is better for older kids.

Agreed (I did say the DS was a kids toy) :p I was painting the picture of how much farther advanced, usefull and complicated the PSP is. Kids that young dont care about multimedia, they just wanna pick it up and play simple games (but you cant watch movies on the DS like the PSP). Tell you the truth, I'd suggest the gameboy advance for their age. They and the games are dirt cheap, and nearly indestructable. Plus they will play the older Gameboy and Gameboy color games. I just gave mine to a kid in the neighborhood when I got my PSP.

DMJ, I'd have to agree with Daredevil on this one. With the age or your kids the Gameboy may be a better buy for you. You can get a nice pre-owned one and then trade it in later for a DS or PSP. The Gameboys are a little sturdier also for smaller kids.

Thanks everyone for your help! I think I'm gonna stick with the DS's this time around though. Like I said, they won't have them that often, they will be put up most of the time, like the Wii is, and I know they love the DS because they play their friends quite a bit. But when the little guy is a little oler might do the game boy, or even leapster. Because once he sees his brothers with these things he'll want one (he's only 3 though, so he's got a year or two before he gets one!)
