I don't know if this has been discussed before... But... Why is it people put the letter X instead of spelling out Christmas? It drives me crazy! :banghead:
Yes, it was discussed here last year. I am one of the ones that does it, and I'm sorry if it offends. I'll admit it's just due to laziness. I am a Christian, I understand that it is CHRISTmas, and I do know what it stands for. But when I'm just talking about shopping, or things like that, I want to be lazy and just refer to it as Xmas (when I'm typing).
I'm sorry I get so upset over it... It's just that they have taken Christ out of everything. We're supposed to say "Happy Holidays"... I just can't bring myself to do it. I'm not very politically correct anyway.
Not mention that it is also a cost savings when it comes to printing those sales flyers and advertisements. Craig
Oh, I don't take Christ out of anything else! I say Merry Christmas to everyone, and sing Silent Night, and all that good stuff. I just get lazy when typing!
FWIW - I don't think we are supposed to do anything. You do what makes you happy and what you are comfortable with - if somebody wants to be offended, they will be.
Actually, using an x is ok: Xmas is a misnomer in the Greek lanuage. The term "Xmas" for Christmas is greek in origin.
In Greek, the first letter of the word Christ is chi. The letter chi in Greek looks just like the letter X in our alphabet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xmas http://www.snopes.com/holidays/christmas/xmasabbr.asp
have you ever seen the "no Xing" signs? same thing.. short hand. i use xmas while typing, but in my head i say "Christmas" the whole time so it has nothing to do w/ taking Christ outta xmas (oops?). at least for me it doesnt. i grew up learning it was an ok short hand and when i got older and first started hearing people complain about it, i thought they were crazy, but i understand now. dont agree, but understand. my sister's name is chrissy and for short we write xy lol
Yes, when I was a student at Campbell one of my religion teachers wrote it out as Xmas. When we questioned it that was the same reason he gave us... and needless to say, he was a very religious man.
All well and good, but...this is not Greece, we are not speaking Greek. So it is not XMAS, the nuns would beat you for it, back in the day:beathorse:
