So my son avoided a deer Friday night and wrecked his truck. It didn't make the news and he is okay. According to his father he did everything he could, he wasn't speeding from what we are aware of. Most importantly my son is okay.

Shawn and I the week before while he visited had just had a talk about accidents and watching out for deer. This was because we were driving to our house and saw 3 elk on the way.

I am just glad he is okay. Sore but okay. Truck is totaled but a car is replaceable and no one else was involved.

I still stand that we have to let our kids drive and we have to let them grow. the worries never go away, especially when you are so far away like I am.

He called me from the hospital and I am just grateful he's alive.

glad your son is ok, but just for future reference (sure I will get fussed at) hit the deer unless he was speeding its cheaper and better to hit the deer. He will probably get charged with Careless and reckless for this.. Like I said unless he was flying the damage would have been less to have hit the deer..

I'm so glad your son's ok, hopefully it didn't scare him too much!

Deer accidents are the worst! When I was a teenager, my mom was in 4 deer-related accidents within a 2 year span, no kidding, she was like a target! She even had those stupid deer-alarm things, that were no good, let me tell you! The last accident was the worst, and I was in it. The roads were wet, it was foggy, and we were driving on a road along a swamp. She swerved to avoid a deer and we ended up flipping the car and landed upside down in the swamp, just feet from a pond. Here we are, upside down in her nice, newly painted mustang. Scared to death, we're all hanging by our seatbelts, our car doors were stuck, couldn't get them open, and she's seen too many movies, scared the car's gonna blow up cause she smells gas! We finally got out, but it was scary. Probably would have been better to hit the deer, you're right, but you don't think about that in the 1/2 second it takes you to see the deer, and those dumb animals, you never know where they're gonna go, I don't even think they know! Still to this day, I'm terrified at night, and certain roads scare me to drive on because of deer.

I have read of people getting killed hitting dear. Either hitting or swerving to avoid, neither is likely to end up good, but I think it's hard to predict the outcome of either. Besides, when it happens to you, reflexes will take over. You only think about what you should have done afterwards.

this is why I am sure people hate getting behind me at night, I drive like grandma. I have hit several animals and done minor damage to my car each time, but not sure if it reflexes or just that knowing an animal verses ditch or another car, I am taking the animal any day. Like I said if you keep your speed down and drive cautious you should be fine... glad yall were ok after the wreck, that would have scared me to death...

This is actually what my father in law told me once and he is a retired state trooper. Why the careless and reckless ticket though? He didn't mention anything about tickets!! (Maybe he should have).

something about not being able to maintain control of your vehicle. because people can claim they were trying to miss a deer when in truth they just lost control of the vehicle. plus if you have the right cover on insurance they will pay for the car to be fixed if you hit the deer with out it going up..(last I remember)

    CHik,

    Glad your son is OK!!

I won't swerve for an animal, I love 'em, but I've always been taught it's better to hit the animal than to lose control trying to avoid one. I once straddled a beagle though, the lucky little devil. He was right in the road, no one coming, so rather than slam on my brakes, I moved over and he went right under the truck and came out scott-free on the other side. That probably wouldn't have worked except it was a full size old Ford Bronco with lots of ground clearance.8)

DH and I are taking bets on which one of us hits a deer first though, we've had a few close calls with the stupid things lately. :?

Last week in NY, at night, we were leaving a Xmas party. We had just pulled out of the driveway, and sure enough, there's a deer, thank goodness I saw the eyes! Hubby slowed down, then I said, stay slow, there's always a second one, and sure enough, about 50 feet down the road, there's the second one, waiting for us! I swear, I think they enjoy doing it to us humans sometimes! Always be careful, whenever there's one, there's another one lurking, waiting for you to speed up, then WHAM! He'll jump out right in front of you! Learned that the hard way.

This thread is scaring the crap out of me, watch me hit a deer within the next week now...
