We found a lovely, stray dog, and nobody so far has claimed her or responded to our ads. She is a large-sized, female, lab mix and is very friendly and appears healthy. I am planning to call Wake and Johnston tomorrow to see if anyone reported her missing, but if not, I will need to make some arrangements for her, as we cannot keep her. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I might be able to take her, or who to call? I don't want to take her to a shelter where she may be euthanized. Any advice would be appreciated. I have searched Craig's list, N&O, and Wake County shelter websites, but do not see any reports of missing dogs fitting her description. Nobody has responded to ads/flyers about her either. Thanks!
Please swing her by a vet tomorrow to see if she has a microchip. That could be the ticket. Otherwise... pickings are slim this time of year. Most rescue groups are full, all the shelters around here do euthanize due to lack of space. Do a search for dog rescue nc and start calling, but I dont imagine there will be anyone with an opening. Good luck and thanks for taking her in!!!
I agree with ljk, check for microchip first. If still no luck, contact Johnston County Animal Protection League, (JCAPL). Is fostering the dog an option for you or can you not keep her at all?
I am going to take her to have the microchip checked, and I just left a message with JCAPL (thanks for the suggestion). She actually was hanging out at the first house in our neighborhood. They said that's the 3rd dog to show up in front of their house, and a kid from outside the neighborhood who plays here sometimes admitted once their family had left a dog here b/c they didn't want it anymore. So we were thinking maybe they did that again... Anyway, we moved the dog to our porch and have been feeding her and put out a bed for her, but my husband won't let her in the house. She really is a pretty big girl, and I have a young toddler plus we are expecting soon, so I don't really feel comfortable fostering her. We can keep feeding her for a few days, but I'd really like to find a group that can shelter or foster her and help her find a permanent home!
Best of luck! Keeping my fingers crossed that she is micro chipped and you are able to find her family!
