http://money.cnn.com/2009/07/06/news/economy/minimum_wage/index.htm?postversion=2009070614 You thought unemployment was bad now? LOL IDIOTS IN WASHINGTON
I remember when the minimum wage went to 2.00 an hour. We are many years past the predicted end of all things that would result because of it.
Have you seen the unemployment % in this state? This will make it go up for a number of reasons that are too complex for you to understand.
When minimum wage goes up, it does cost many a jobs and prices go through the roof. People get used to it and then think nothing of it. But in this economy, now is NOT the time to do that. When I was a manager and minimum wage went up, I had to decide who to let go b/c I couldn't afford to keep them all. Then the main company raised the prices. Rising prices mean fewer customers, means fewer hours, fewer jobs for people. It's a ripple effect. Everything will go up b/c of this hike. I'm not an economist but used to be a manager & felt the effects of this. My uncle is an economist so I have to "listen" to it all the time--LOL. Actually have learned things along the way. Prices have already slowly creeped up this year to prepare for this. Have any of you noticed the grocery bill??? We are buying hte same exact things/ amount as last year at this time and are paying approximately $300 more a month. We are cutting every way we can. Our water bill used to be consistently $40 to $45 a month. It is now $75. Our salary has not increased not one dime to account for all the increases going on around us. This will continue to worsen I fear w/ the minimum wage hike. Your customer service goes way down as well b/c companies/ restuarants try to work w/ less workers to make up the difference in pay. I usually stay away from these discussions but am so tired of folks seeing how throwing more money at a situation makes things better. Just the opposite. Get prepared to pay way more for things. Okay, had my vent. Again, these are MY opinions based on MY experiences. I am NOT an expert and don't claim to be--LOL. Just life experiences. stephanie--mom to 7
Just another "good intention" that does nothing but work against the very people it is supposed to help. Hope. Change. You're laid off
More jobs lost - Let the market decide what employees earn. When you force a guy in West Virginia to pay the same wage as a a company in a big city like say New York you are only hurting his chance to hire more people.
I didn't make any money at my first job, I was 13  So at the end of the year the boss lady gave me a diamond & onyx ring for my help at the daycare center.
What no one (but me apparently) seems to understand is that increasing the minimum wage also increases the amount of money deducted from your paycheck in taxes. All the government is doing is giving themselves a interest free loan for 11 months. No wonder Obama got elected
Nah, you're a young whippersnapper. I got my first public job in high school, and the minimum wage was $1.00 an hour. Well, before that I had a paper route, and I got about a penny a paper.:lol:
Who are you calling old? My first job was $3.35 an hour also. I thought I was hot stuff when I got a raise to $3.84 per hour.
Hmmm, sounds like a good way to supplement my retirement income. Since I have experience and all.
they have to deduct expenses, gas and wear and tear, they pay nothing here, i delivered orlando sentinal and we got 600-800 a week, and the houses are closer together and there were no boxes so you could just throw them! some people would pay baggers on sunday and that was a way to make extra money.
