Conversation overheard at DR Wells just moments ago.....

Hey, Have you seen Mr. Smith???
    No...why?
Well, when you see him tell him the cows are out again! We just got them back in the pen and then they got out again!!

    I LOVE Johnston County!!!

Name changed to Mr. Smith because I didn't catch the real name they used.

I just saw on the news earlier where 4 cows got into a woman's living room and wrecked it,I don't think it was around here though but I'm sure they left behind some good fertilizer!

Small towns are small because no one wants to live there.

Was many years ago, but several friends and I were cruising Benson on motorcycles during Mule Days when suddenly from one of the sides streets a cow that had escaped from the rodeo area came running out onto main street and one of my buddies and the cow had a collision, which caused him to drop his bike, and the crowd was dying laughing at the incident. Only thing injured in the incident was his ego and a couple of scratches on some of the chrome.

I love living in a small town; I moved to Benson from Atlanta. It was a culture shock at first, but, at least now I feel safe letting my kids out to play.

And by the way, Craig..you should come back to Mule Day again. The only thing you have to worry about running into you now is some guy who only rides a horse once a year, trying to drink his beer and dial his cell phone at the same time!

Or because no one has discovered them yet. We used to call this God's country before I-40 came through. Now so many people have moved here it is nothing like the place that attracted the first wave of transplants. Small country stores like DR Wells dotted the county and usually had a few farmers sitting in the back wearing overalls, drinking a Coke with a BC powder. There were dirt roads everywhere and you where likely to see chickens or guineas crossing, and a stray cow or hog was a common occurrence. Sometimes you'd have to wait while farmers moved cows across a road from one field to the next.

We still have a couple of gas station/stores like that in our area. One of the gas stations usually has lower gas than the big guys. My mother asked him about it once and he stated that he, unlike the big guys, does not raise his price until he actually has the higher gas in his tanks going to customers. I guess, thinking about it, it would work that way on the back end as well with this country station.

That is how it is still where my parents live and have their farm, the weird part about it is believe it or not it is in NY.

Same here- the part of NY where my family is from has as many horse and buggy's as it does cars. Farms, vineyards and B&B's make up most of the landscape. It will never grow like it has here - one reason is high taxes, the other is lack of infrastructure. Nice place to retire, but I'll take the lifestyle here any day.
It's getting harder to find rural lifestyles here anywhere between I85 and I95.
