Does anyone know what was happening on Cornwallis Road this morning (around 11.30am)? There was a line of traffic accompanied by police escort with several Mexicans standing on the side of the road in matching hoodies. They were just standing, not doing anything particular. Their hoodies seemed religious in nature. The cavalcade seemed to have a float and someone carrying a lit metal torch at the front. Never seen it before, just wondering what it was?
They weren't holding signs saying they were Mexicans, but no rocket science needed on the basis of: A) They all appeared to be the same ethnicity. Mexican was a first guess based on their appearance. B) I confirmed item A by seeing the giant sign written banner splayed across the pick up truck at the front with the torch bearer. Written in Spanish. Don't make this a race issue where it isn't. They were Mexican, I didn't infer anything derogatory. Thanks for being helpful though.
You know there are 21 countries where Spanish is the most spoken and/or official language right? Not to mention that in about a half dozen more countries Spanish is the 2nd most spoken language, including the USA. How do you know they were not from Puerto Rico, or Guatemala? Roughly a half billion people speak Spanish in the world, not all of them are from Mexico. In fact only about 140 million are. Unless you went up to them and asked them what country they were from, all you can infer is that they were possibly of Spanish descent based on your observations.
You wonderful PC folk act as if it is derogatory to be Mexican. Get a life please or take this crap to the political pit where your ilk can help you make a case out of nothing. Good day.
Okay let me rephrase so that no one's sensibilities get all offended (though nothing offensive was said or implied). There was a non Caucasian ethnicity holding some kind of parade or cavalcade on Cornwallis. They had a police escort and they stood along the road every 200 feet or so. Does anyone know what this was? Hopefully you can now sleep better at night with that whole Spanish/Mexican thang sorted out. Also, to derail my post further (which seems to be some intent here), how many of your stated demographic(s) inhabit Wake and Johnston Counties? This way we can gamble on the probability of what Spanish speaking area they are from!
I think the word you're looking for is, "Hispanic". Spanish people refer to people of, or from, Spain in Europe. Whereas, Hispanic refers to those of Spanish descent primarily in Latin American countries once colonized by Spain. And, yes, you are correct that a large majority of Hispanic people in the area hail from Mexico, so while your assertion is based in common sense you might see where it can get offensive. This is not a political correctness issue, it is simply an educational issue of geography, world culture and common decency to not refer to people in a way that is derogatory. Just as if you ever mistake a white Irish guy for an Englishman you may have a fight on your hands.
I'm of Irish, Italian, and German descent if it matters so much. But my grandparents were born in NYC in the early 1900s. So I would just say I am American at this point.
Soooo while we're in the business of being educational, here's an assignment, quote me as to where I made any derogatory reference? I simply said Mexicans.....Nothing derogatory there. If you're inferring it was derogatory then that ball is solely in your court. And while we're on the topic of English, Irish references, hell, immigrants in general, i'll have you to know I'm pretty clued up there. Lol.... But while we're at it, still asking about the original point of the post. You seem to have zero info on that!
If you want to investigate. You indicated police escort. This is in the county. Call Johnston County Sheriff Dept and inquire what the situation was.
oh man!! I hate to mention that it was a Mexican and Catholic thing according to a Mexican hispanic friend of mine. It will ultimately end up in Washington DC. He told a neat story to go along with it but my fingers are already tired.
How about the possibility that they might not be from Mexico? Or for that matter, they have lived in the US for quite some time and they are third generation American citizens. I really don't care about political correctness, to be honest, but it's the lack of geographical/social awareness that bugs me (not by you, necessarily, just in general).
How about it's just plain ignorant to refer to someone who appears hispanic as Mexican, not to mention just plain insulting to anyone who is not Mexican. I am hispanic and get tired of the ignorance of people referring to me and my family as Mexican just because I can speak Spanish.
don't be offended so easily.. some people just need to lighten up and not be so anal about that. Life could be a lot worse.
I'm American and I get sick of people calling me English just because I speak english... Unless any of you are here on a visa or are undocumented, then sorry friends you're American also. Lets not confuse nationality with ethnicity. Oh wait I forgot, I now want to be refered to as an English, Irish, Welsh, German, French, Ukrainian, Polish, Russian, and %1 Pacific Islander American, American. Thank you.
