The 2006 Oakwood Cemetery Lantern Walk will be held on Saturday, October 28 from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. The Lantern Walk is a family-oriented event featuring volunteers in authentic mid-1800’s clothing presenting historical skits. Ladies in period clothing will guide groups of visitors through the candle-lit pathways of the cemetery to each skit. The tour takes about one hour to complete and at the completion of the tour, refreshments of hot cider and cookies will be served in the House of Memory. The event will be held in the Confederate section of Oakwood Cemetery – the resting place of more than 1400 Confederate soldiers. Oakwood Cemetery is located at 701 Oakwood Avenue near downtown Raleigh. Cost is $6.00 per persons over 12, $3.00 ages 6-11, and the event is free for children under six years of age. A $1 discount per ticket is available for groups of ten or more. Profits from the ticket sales will benefit the continued restoration of the Confederate section of Oakwood. For additional information or to purchase advance tickets, call Tom Smith at 772-7786.
That sounds fun but.... will anyone be jumping out and all that crap? Or will it be just a spooky historical tour?
It's a set of historical skits based on particular soldiers and/or other historical figures buried in Oakwood. It's not a Halloween walk or anything scary. Totally different from the usual Halloween fare. It is a little eerie walking through the cemetery at night though....
Argh, that sounds really cool, but I just volunteered to work late that night. I love learning historic stuff!!
My sister-in-law and brother live in Historic Oakwood and she was one of the actors last year. It is a pretty neat thing to see.
I thought I'd bump this one back up for anybody thinking about going to the Oakwood Lantern Walk. Saturday's weather looks pretty nice and a lot of work has been done in preparation for the Lantern Walk - it should be a good time. The list of this year's skits are: The Unique Pipe, Oath of Allegiance, Battlefield Hospital, Spirits of Field Music, Judicial Chess Game, and Secession Ball. Come out to learn a bit about North Carolina's Civil War past and a glimpse at some of the lives of those buried in Oakwood.
