did you like it? was your exp good, bad, ugly? would you recommend it or would you go another way to save for your kids college? did one state work better than another?
My children are too young to have used our 529 yet, but we opened one with the State of Virginia about 5 years ago based on the strong recommendation from our financial advisor. He said the although we were not reaping the tax benefits of using NC's 529 plan, NC's 529 investment return was so poor that we would do so much better w/ VA to make up for the loss benefits. It was news to me that you could invest in a 529 plan outside of the State you reside, and my children can attend any college they'd like- they're not limited to VA colleges. When googling 529 plans VA always comes up as one of the best investments. I've yet to see a good review on the NC plan. A quick google brought up this article: http://articles.moneycentral.msn.co...ngForCollege/The5BestCollegeSavingsPlans.aspx
Va. College Savings Plan (American Funds) http://www.americanfunds.com This is one of the most popular 529 plan that we offer our clients. American Funds are pretty good with low expenses.
I've not opened a 529 for my kids - that is something I have been planning to do but not done yet. However, I listen to Clark Howard sometimes on the radio and have heard him talking about the various plans. On his website, he has some information about the plans and has rated which states have the best plans. Good luck
