First off, this thread is NOT intended to be an advertisement. I have started a local cleaning service and I have been putting up fliers at local businesses to drum up some work. I posted some this morning and a few minutes ago got a phone call from a local business owner who told me that what I was doing was illegal and that I could be prosecuted for it. He told me that he had a monitoring system at his store because he had been robbed at gunpoint twice already. He said he saw what I was doing via his monitoring service and once he figured out I was just posting a flier he relaxed, BUT he also informed me not to do it anymore and that if I did I would be prosecuted for doing so. I apoligized for putting the flier on his business and told him I wouldn't bother him anymore. Now I don't want to break any laws or make anyone angry, but I'm wondering if what he said was true or not. If it is I will find another way to advertise. I did this in the past in a different area and it worked really well, but of course that was a different place and time. So again, is what I'm doing illegal? If so I'll find another way to advertise. P.S. I apoligize to any of you local business owners who may be reading this that are upset about me posting the fliers. It wasn't done with any wrong intent.
i don't know about the legality of it but in the past when i have posted fliers for fundraisers, etc., i was always sure to have the permission of the business owner where i wanted to post. Good luck in your new business.
Thanks for the advice. Maybe I wasn't clear about what I was doing. I was placing these fliers on the businesses for THEM, not to drum up business from their customers. When I left a flier on the guys door it was for him if he needed a cleaner, not an ad for the general public. I put them on the metal part of the door of the business so he would see it when he came in to open up. Maybe he thought I was advertising to his customers and not for him. That puts a whole new perspective on it. Thanks, Kaci P.S. For those of you business owners, it was intended for you, not your customers. Sorry
Yeah that's a whole different ballgame - if that is illegal then they would have to arrest whole lot of people:lol: It is a common thing to come to work and find flyers in our door or even at our home.
Did the person cite any law he claimed you were violating? I can't think of any law against putting a flyer on someone's door. Putting anything in a mailbox without proper postage is a federal crime. That is why, so often, you find flyers hanging from mailboxes, not inside them.
Thanks KdsGrandma - i was going to post the same thing but had a customer come in - don't ya hate when work interferes with my 4042 posting:lol:
How is that any different than the crap people leave on windshields in parking lots. At the very least, those people should have to pay the days lot cleaning, for all the people that are just going to toss it off the car and onto the ground.
